I am playing through this right now. I find it to be ok. The money grinding is just such a CHORE... The enemy attack sounds are like straight out of the Atari 2600 and gets annoying quickly. The battles also are just so....odd...like all over the place. Characters whacking an enemy for like 20 and then next round 1. Its just so weird.
Definitely neat that it has a main character who was female, didn't see that much back in the 80s.
I say it is a decent game so far, at least worth a play through but not an overly fantastic RPG. I find it a lot better that Y's and WAY better than miracle warriors.
Another neat note (to me anyway) is that the copy I bought came with the original sale receipt in the box. Someone paid 69.99 USD for it back in 89....and people say games today are expensive.

Hello, everyone! This is the first time I post here after some lurking. I've recently bought a copy of Phantasy Star and I've noticed there's garbage on the save/load window, both at the menu and in game. Does anyone else have this issue or know to what it could be due? I've searched a little on the internet but I've found nothing. For the rest the game seems to work perfectly. Thanks for any help!

It's either the battery or the save RAM itself, either way it's corrupting data so your saves will be damaged...

The battery can be changed, but what about the save RAM? :/ By the way, this is the inside of my cartridge. It surprises me that it's larger than the one shown in the video posted by nearbythiscafe, even though it's the same game. Anyway, no weird colours anywhere I'll try to change the battery but it'll take some time. Thanks for the hints EDIT: Removing the battery and then soldering it back solved the issue, now the game works as it should. Thanks for the suggestion and sorry for having posted in the wrong session. Yay, a working Phantasy Star!

Check out this video of the new SEGA AGES version of Phantasy Star! I love what they have done with the map and stats to the side of the gameplay. Also includes FM Sound option (on by default as it's better than a standard Master System.
I tried to play this on my Master System a few years back and made my own maps but it was a bit of a struggle. I've just downloaded this and had a quick go, the pause menu also has tables for item guide, magic etc - really helpful!

I played it a while back on the Wii and remember being terrible at it and not knowing what to do. I may give it another shot soon.
