Getting close, Stan! You use the Ice Digger on Dezoris to plow through a few areas that you can't walk over (due to, wait for it...the ice). Here's a map that denotes the ice areas in light blue: www.gamefaqs.com/console/sms/file/588116/39489Basically you need to use the Digger to get to the Aeroprism Cave where you can get the Aeroprism that will allow you to see the Sky Tower that you embark on at the end of the game. Then you also need to use the Digger to get to the Tree of Laerma where you use your torch (have that yet?) to melt the tree and get the Nut that Myau needs to actually fly you up to that Sky Tower (in one of the coolest little 8-bit animations ever!). I always loved the three vehicles in the game, a nice touch.

Phantasy Star is hands down the best game on the system, but overall, I think Phantasy Star II is the best of the series, followed by Phantasy Star III (I'm tired of everyone saying III sucks).

I dunno, man. I've been playing PS II lately and I've been pretty underwhelmed with the whole thing thus far. The generic battle screens get tiresome quickly and all the palette swap dungeons are pretty boring. Phantasy Star did the two of those much better. I like the music in the first game more, too. I'm about 2/3 done, but the game is really going to have to pull out some magic here to better the first game.

So I just started this for the first time, and it's damn near impossible to do anything!!!
I've searched the first few towns and got my first hints of what I need to do, but so far I've spent most of my time levelling up and healing! I'm at level 5 now and have all the basic armour, soon as I reach Level 6 I'm off exploring for real!
I'm not using a guide at all BTW, I think it ruins the experience of playing games, so I can envisage this taking a while to finish. I've got my notebook out already, suppose I'd better get the graph paper ready for those dungeons ;D.
I must say the graphics are excellent for an SMS title, when I went in the first dungeon I was shocked to find it was 3D!

yeah, the beginning is really harsh, you need to get to level 10 before starting to play easily. at the very beginning, it's something like: go out of the village, fight once, get back to the village, heal, save, go out, die, load, go out, one fight etc etc etc pretty boring lol

I had it down to pretty much a science by the end of the levelling up process at the start to the point where I was watching TV and just pushing buttons in a routine fashion. ninja, you are a beast for trying to do this without a guide. I had the guide and it still took me FOREVER. I generally don't like to read guides, but I hate missing out on stuff in RPGs, and when it comes to PS, I hate being lost in all those mazes. It came down to me thinking "okay, I'm smart enough that I could figure this out on my own with a little effort, so why not let someone else figure it out for me so I can finish the game quicker and get to something else."

I'm just mapping the dungeons out as I go checking every twist and turn for goodies. I'm sure there'll be the odd thing I miss along the way, but I'll follow up on every lead that I get from talking to people (every response worth remembering is written down in my notebook). I might miss the odd hidden item here and there, but as I'm not using a guide I'll never know . So far the only part I struggled on was finding the road pass, but I got there on my third round of all the open parts of the game ;D. TBH I'm finding the game rather slow, the graphics and tunes are keeping me interested at the minute but I don't think it'll be long before it starts boring me.

If you are not using a guide at all for the maps, then be sure to look for hidden passages in the walls of some of the dungeons.

If you are not using a guide at all for the maps, then be sure to look for hidden passages in the walls of some of the dungeons. I've probably missed loads of hidden stuff, I've only found one hidden passage so far and that was in the dungeon where you meet Noah, I've only been checking dead ends for hidden walls though. I'm guessing I've missed something in the Peninsula dungeon below Scion, I spent hours mapping that damn thing out and all for a weapon for Myau. Levelled all my characters up a few times and got a healthy bank balance in the process mind you, so it's not all bad! I think the hardest part of playing games like this without a guide is that I have no idea how far I am into the game!!! It says 16 dungeons on the back of the box I think, but I don't know if that includes the little passage type dungeons or not? If not then I guess I'm a quarter of the way through the game at 4 dungeons finished. I'll pummel a few more hours into it this afternoon and see where I get .

Holy Man!
I had never really played this game. I had Phantasy Star II on the Smash Pack compilation for the Dreamcast and gave it some play, too bad the Smash Pack used some crappy emulator, the sounds are terrible for ALL the games, so in short it never got much play. I tried Phantasy Star on an emulator just to see what the fuss was about and was impressed I must say. But I'm just not into emulation... I like it to try the game, but to really PLAY it it has to be the cart loaded in a system connected to a picture tube TV with MY controller. Finally I decided what the hell and bought Phantasy Star on eBay. Best $25 I ever spent. I finally beat this the other night. Awesome game. Awesome. I'll admit I had to go to The Phantasy Star Pages for help with the VERY last dungeon... damn hidden door. I didn't find ANY hidden doors when I played through. I used graph paper and mapped it all myself. Took about a week. I expected longer, but then I played a LOT in that week. Again, awesome game. Definitely a must have/must play. They don't make games like this anymore.
Now I've broken out an old copy of Sega Genesis Collection for PS2 I had squirreled away and am playing Phantasy Star II. So far? An Awesome Game! Looking forward to playing all four in time.

I'm a little surprised how many people never played Phantasy Star. I really thought it was a key title in making a SMS fan.

Hey just a heads up for anyone planning to play Phantasy Star II anytime soon. The last two times I played this game I ran into a weird glitch. It happens when you hit the dungeon called Noah when you get the Neisword. I played this once on an emulator and once on the Wii VC and ran into the glitch both times. You'll know if you get the glitch because once you enter Noah there is no music or sounds anymore and the game will freeze if you use the Neisword to warp. I forget the details of it now but make a 2nd save file before getting there. There is a way past it. I think it has to do with having a certain combo of weapons equipped. The 2nd save file will come in handy if you do run into it. The first time I ran into it, it really pissed me off because I played through the game very slowly taking extra time to level up and the stage Noah is basically the end of the game so all that work went to waste because I somehow ruined my save file (I think I saved while it was frozen, either that or I was stuck inside Noah with my only option to warp out using the sword which always froze the game). On the Wii I figured out there is a way to fix the problem so mess with it a bit and I'm sure you can figure it out. I can't remember the exact details of what to do. Anyway, you'll be impressed with the ending to part II. Phantasy Star is just an awesome series, for me it's one of the main reasons I'm into games. It's not the same seeing you can't play them online anymore but it's worth checking out Phantasy Star Online and Phantasy Star Universe. Haven't finished PSII however I'm on the final boss, but only level 31... soooo.... Rather than level up for hours on end to beat him I just had to move on PSIII.
At first I HATED it... everything about it... except the store music... However now I'm just moving on to the second generation and have chosen Lena as my wife and now have Nial as my character, and I'm loving it. The more I played the more I began to love all the things I hated before. It's amazing.
Awesome series. Awesome.
