Okay, it's my turn to dish up another pick for game of the week/game of the month/game club/Stanley's special friends club.
Those of you that remember me will know my thoughts of Game of the week are to pick a rather obscure title, one that I love but doesn't have much exposure, the idea being that fellow SMSers will be introduced to a game they might not have given a proper chance before.
Well after browsing the list of previously picked games that train of thought has now gone out the window (and it has also saved you all from playing Alf for the next few weeks )
I cannot believe this game has not yet been picked. It is not only one of the greatest SMS games but its one of the greatest video games ever made.
Ladies and Gentlemen, boys and girls, I give you:
Phantasy Star
Like I said, I cannot believe this has not been picked yet. If you have a SMS you simply have to have this game.
Despite having a soft spot for RPGs when I was younger, I never actually had this game for my SMS. I started collecting SMS games in 2001 but didnt pick up a copy of this until about 2003.
Everyone on here said how amazing it was, but I figured a lot of that must the nostalgia factor. Well when I finally got my copy and put it on to check it worked ok, I was instantly drawn in and spent the next few weeks.
No other SMS game that I hadn't played as a kid has had such an impact on me.
Okay, so enough about that - Lets talk about the game!
Phantasy Star is a top down scrolling RPG. You control Alis, and later add 3 members to your team, Odin, a huge muscly guy, Noah, a classy well dressed dude and a talking yellow cat called Myau. What more could you want?
Its your classic 'wander from town to town fighting monsters gaining experience' type RPG, but when you consider this game is now 20 years old, its pretty amazing.
The graphics are superb throughout, and the 3D dungeons are amazing (although without a map they can get very frustrating! - Trapdoors)
The music is superb and really adds to the atmosphere of the game.
I also love the fact that burgers and coke are used to increase your health
There isn't really much to say about this game that hasn't already been said. Just go play it!
If you've never really fancied trying this game - put your doubts to one side and PLAY IT - you'll love it.
And for the rest of us, I think this game deserves to be played through at least once every 2 years, so load it up and remind yourself just how great our beloved console is.........
