I've given this a bit of a play this morning, I have played it before but it didn't leave much of an impression. I quite like the game, but its early 32kb card origins definitely stick out, and you can see why it wasn't released as a stand alone cartridge. I think if Sega had put a bit more work into it then it could have been released without Astro Warrior. With a bit of extra space there could have been some more tile graphics to help differentiate between the rooms, perhaps then the games manual wouldn't have had to recommend drawing a map.
I think the collision detection could be better too, you really have to hit early with the hammer. I find it a bit too frustrating as it is, although I very much appreciate that the game doesn't punish you too much as you can't walk off the paths and die. It feels a bit like an expanded Pac Man at times, when you avoid enemies that have a movement pattern. It also reminds me a bit of Zelda too, however Pit Pot came out a year earlier, if the game had been expanded a bit with an inventory and such, it may well be more fondly remembered.

Castle of Illusion is definitely better on the SMS to me too. I don't think its just the fact I grew up on that version either. Graphically I think the SMS version looks a lot better, its much more bright and colourful than the Megadrive release, more suited to a Mickey Mouse world.
I'd suggest the first Sonic game too. The SMS version has more of the green hill zones than the 16bit version, which switched to slower paced (and less fun) levels quite early on. The beautiful Jungle levels don't make an appearance on the Megadrive either, and I do miss those. When it comes to Sonic 2 though the roles are reversed and there's no contest, the 16bit game is much better.
Ninja Gaiden, while unreleased (and still somewhat unfinished, but a playable ROM does exist) is a much more basic game on the Megadrive, the Master System game is far superior.

It does seem like a step back. Unfortunately it seems due to them not having different sprites for the Master System and GameGear versions as there was for the original game. It was a bit of a rush job I suppose, it came out pretty quickly after the first game.

Ian has done a great job of making a game that follows on from the original's story line (which was left open), while adding new stuff that a true sequel would have done if Sega had made one (the closest thing - Enchanted Castle, doesn't really count to me). So calling it anything other than "2" wouldn't really fit. Its a homage to Segas fine work, not a profit making exercise - see the over priced ebay auction linked earlier for that!

I'd be less worried about colour scheme and more about what goes in there. A nice comfy sofa, more shelving than you think you need, nice display cabinets to keep things on show without them getting dusty, a quality CRT TV for the retro consoles. Unless the room is massive, the games collection will probably fill most of the empty space, and any blank bits can be covered with posters/prints of your favourite gaming artwork etc.

Played this a bit today, for some reason I've not played it for very long before, always played the first game more. Its a quality sequel, adding more features yet keeping the same feel of the first game. The graphics as with the first game perfectly capture the style of the books, and the animated film which I watched a lot as a kid. I love how the levels change depending on which character you play as, and that Asterix and Obelix have different moves, adding to the replay value. The obelix sprite in particular is impressively big too. Its really nice mix of platforming and some puzzles to solve, and that surfing level is really cool.
It's another one of those games that had it been released on the Nes would be regarded as a classic and would be far better known about.

To save a bit of money on each console made, which adds up to a lot when they made millions of them. I don't think music quality was that big of an issue back then, when most were being played on low quality TV's often with mono sound anyway. I certainly didn't notice anything wrong with it as a kid, and with a game like Chuck Rock which has no music in game at all, I think you'd appreciate a PSG soundtrack :-)

If its not even booting the built in game, that's not a good sign! Are the cartridge port pins all in good shape and not bent out of place? They do have a wire fix from the factory like you say, so that's not unusual.

There's quite a lot of variety in everyone's lists so far, makes me want to play some of these games again a bit more thoroughly.

great to see action fighter get some love [/quote] Really like the game, even though I'm not very good at it. I think its a shame it never got an even more sophisticated sequel.
