Hi all, this is going to seem like a strange post, I can't explain this any other way, but does anyone have experiance of Codemasters games not working at all on SMS model 1? I've tried three different Model 1 systems, and a Megadrive with Master System convertor. All games play fine on these systems apart from Codemasters titles.
I got Micro Machines off Phil and couldn't get it to work. So like always, I cleaned it with Isopropyl and tested it again in my NTSC Master System. Still no joy. It would get as far as showing the Codemasters logo, then go to a blue screen, I could hear music playing, but the image was static.
I left it for a while, and came back to it a bit later. Tried it in a PAL Megadrive with Master System convertor (same RGB Scart cable and PSU as the Master System). This time I just got a black screen. Swapped back over to the SMS, and see the Codemasters logo and crash in the same place.
I then assumed it was because my Master System was 60Hz, so I unboxed another system PAL model 1 and tried it - exact same. So at this point, I think the cartridge is goosed, then I decide to try Dizzy and Cosmic Spacehead. Cosmic I get the exact same issue as with Micromachines, with Dizzy I just get some garbled corruption from the start. Again, tested all these in the PAL Megadrive, PAL Master System and NTSC Master system, exact same results.
I read that these games use a different display mode than standard SMS games, so I go down the route of thinking it's either cable or my TV that's the problem. I decided to plug into a SCART>HDMI convertor and still get the same issue. At this point I think to change the RGB scart cable for a composite cable - Same. Then I try a different TV (older TV) - same. I go back to original TV and then Try an old Coaxial Aerial - Same issue Last thing I try a SMS 2 - and all games work flawlessly first time. I'm so confused. I know I've played these games previously on both my Megadrive with SMS convertor and SMS Model 1.
Does any of this sound familiar to anyone?

Brilliant pick up mate! I've taken my eye off eBay this month due to spending all my pennies for the month otherwise I'd have been on it too. A superb find, bargains are still out there, just gotta be patient and hunt them down π

Yeah, I would have been around the same probably, around 40 game or so, I was just lucky to know the guy I did otherwise it would have been half of that. I managed to get some games from him that reviews aren't always kind to, but I always enjoyed - Strider, Basketball Nightmare, Golden Axe, Running Battle, are just a few. Great photos. I wonder if I should set up a more personal Twitter account, as I pretty much just use my account for work-related stuff. Strider could have been a good one if it wasn't for the slow-down on the boss scenes and the "leap of faith" mechanics. I never had Basketball Nightmare back in the day, but really enjoyed both Golden Axe and Running Battle. The latter gets a lot of criticism, but for me it was okay, I quite liked doing that slightly buggy, stupidly long flying kick attack I setup the Twitter when I was a bit bored during the first lockdown, I'm using it pretty much exclusively for gaming/collecting chat, staying away from politics and all the rest of it with that account! Amazing how many SMS fans there are out there, I was hoping to try and entice some of them to the forums so I name-drop and point people to the forum whenever I get a chance

Well, have to mention Cuphead as the creators have said that it's one of their dreams to make an SMS port of the game. I don't know why this game popped in my head, but Sky Force Anniversary with its upgrade system would be an easy and very doable port IMO. A Minecraft-esque or Animal Crossing-esque game would be fun and interesting to see how it could/would work on the SMS. And finally, Picross games, gimme all the Picross games on the system. Really the creator's of Cuphead are SMS fans? That's pretty cool. Picross is a good pick and should actually run fine since it's a pretty straightforward game. Similar to Animal Crossing I would like to see Stardew Valley/Story of Seasons. The Game Boy had simplified Harvest Moon ports, but I think the SMS could do better than that. I do like Cuphead, but I'm really rubbish at it. I'd love to have seen something like Terraria attempted on the SMS. No where near the same depth obviously, but with the survival / building and exploration elements. It could have been awesome

Don't know how I missed this first time around. Some of the time I was in the same boat as many others piecing together reviews from different magazines, and word of mouth from other kids at school. But, and I've mentioned this elsewhere before on the forum in the past, I was lucky that there was a kid from the year below me at school, who lived just two streets away from me, and he was one of those kids whose parents bought him the latest system and the latest games all the time. He had a huge collection of games in general, and when he moved on to the Megadrive he was happy to sell off his Master System games for only a few quid each, even if he'd only played each of them a handful of times. I could go round to his house and, say I had a Β£10, he'd let me try, say six games and choose three of them to buy for that Β£10. If I got pocket money the next week I could buy another couple. It was mainly through him that I managed to have quite a big Master System collection as a kid, I was pretty lucky. It's funny, towards the end of my SMS days I had amassed what I thought was a pretty huge collection. (Something like 35-40 games) It was more than any kids I knew apart from people who collected tapes for C64 etc. My parents deffo weren't rich, it's just that I had pretty much asked for games every year at birthday/Christmas. My dad was one of those guys who tended to buy the cheapest games he could find, and due to this I had pretty much all the "budget" games of the time like Fantasy Zone, The Ninja etc from Argos. These are not bad games by any means, some very good memories there. I remember being amazed at the selection when What-Everyone-wants started selling at Β£12.99 each. That's where I got some epic games like Phantasy Star, Alex Kidd in Shinobi World etc. 1st Picture was around 1991 before an epic Christmas where I got loads of games... Cyber Shinobi, Alien Storm, Rambo 3, Running Battle, Shadow Dancer and possibly more.

Yeah, I agree, the rarity guide was mostly led by forum member Anagrama (I was sad to hear that he sold up and hasn't been around for a while). I think it hasn't been updated since around 2005/2006. Back then, creating a rarity guide was a bit of a controversial thing. I guess people were scared it would lead to sky-high prices..... nuff said I would say that rarity and value are two totally different things, some games are valuable just because they're really good (Alex Kidd in Miracle World, The Wonderboy Series and Master of Darkness), nobody would have considered these to be "rare" as they come up often, but do end up going for a high price. In contrast to this games like Championship Hockey are considered to be rare because they sold in such low numbers (for good reason) and being released towards the end of the console's lifespan. Some games that we consider to be rare in the UK, aren't really rare elsewhere. I noticed that "Classics" versions of games are much more common in European countries, especially Germany/Czech Republic/France than they are in the UK, it's also much easier to pickup the later releases like T2 the Arcade game, Smurfs, Spiderman and the Sinister Six etc. Back in those days, eBay wasn't joined up and you had to manually browse ebay.com, .dk or .fr etc if you wanted to see games for sale in other countries, some of us were too lazy to do this. Out of everything though, I think the changes of how sales work on eBay itself has the biggest impact on price, this is fuelled by eBay's desire to become less "jumble sale"/"flea market" and instead become more competitive with higher price sites like Amazon. In the early 2000's there wasn't such a thing as "buy it now" or "best offers" on eBay, people listed their games as auctions, and you got what people were prepared to pay at that time they logged on. These days, "Buy it now" and eBay free listing means the same games can sit on there for months at a time until someone eventually comes along and hits the "buy it now" - then as soon as someone see's the completed listing, they list their own copy at the same price and it starts all over again. It's eBay itself that's driven up the prices of these games.

That's an amazing collection for only starting a year ago, and looks like you managed to get so many complete copies too. If you don't mind asking, how much roughly would you say you've spent so far? I've never really been a "collector" as such, more, I bought games to play them, I collected for 8 years originally and still didn't get a complete collection, but this time I've actually started to organise for once, my list is here tinyurl.com/fkswxenk I just don't know if it's possible with some of these prices these days. Can't imagine being able to justify spending Β£250-Β£300 on the unicorn games.

I was annoyed I just missed a copy of streets of rage 2 that came up as a buy it now for Β£15 a couple of weeks ago! I know the person that got it made it more frustrating! π€£ Thats a cracking price but as you say even more annoying when you know the winner. I got deep duck trouble for Β£13 in november which was a complete bargain. Ive got to the stage now where bundles are no use anymore because ive got most of the games in them. I had no idea that Deep Duck Trouble was a Β£50 game these days! That's insane!

Last time round i got it for a tenner π± Im also happy to use usa games in my collection, ive got a trading friend in the usa and ive sourced around 60 games off him so far including most of the usa exclusives. I was annoyed I just missed a copy of streets of rage 2 that came up as a buy it now for Β£15 a couple of weeks ago! I know the person that got it made it more frustrating! π€£

Realised I haven't done this yet either. I'm hoping to get a European set, but some games may be US copies, I'm not bothered about this. I would just like to own each unique title. After that I'll probably pickup the US exclusives.
For now I'm on the lookout for these games that are missing:
Assault City (Light Phaser Version) Asterix and the Great Rescue Bank Panic [card] Buggy Run California Games II Championship Hockey Cheese Cat-Astrophe (starring Speedy Gonzales) Daffy Duck in Hollywood F-16 Fighter [card] Flash, The Ghost House [card] Great Soccer [card] Home Alone Incredible Hulk, The Masters of Combat Mortal Kombat II My Hero [card] Power Strike Power Strike II Road Rash Schtroumpfs Autour du Monde, Les Schtroumpfs, Les Sega World Tournament Golf Simpsons, The: Bart vs. The World Spy vs. Spy [card] Streets of Rage II T2: The Arcade Game Teddy Boy [card] Ultimate Soccer Wonder Boy in Monster World

Good morning I joined yesterday and would like to say what a fantastic place you have here. The master system was my 1st console as a child previously having a Amstrad and Commodore 64. My parents gave me a choice of a mega drive or a master system. I have always wanted to start collecting and finally started last month. I have around 25 games and a console so far. Just been using ebay. Can anybody recommend anywhere else to further my newbie collection. Sorry should have said I'm from Scotland folks. Have a great day I am away to work lol. Great to see another Scottish SMS fan. π There's more than few on here π. I'm from Glasgow but living South Lanarkshire at the moment. Living the tier 4 life give us plenty of time for SMS gaming at the moment! I recently restarted my SMS collection after selling some of it about 10 years ago, so everything old is new again to me. EBay is one place for sure, don't forget to look at Facebook marketplace, Gumtree and try looking at classifieds listings in European sites (like eBay kleinanzeigen - its I German but I use Google translate. It's good for some later releases more common in Germany) and of course theres various small retro gaming website stores like console passion, 8bitbeyond, consolemad, retrogear.co.uk. some of these websites don't seem to have caught up with recent price hikes, so worth checking out. One tip I would say at the start is it's probably easier and Cheaper to bulk buy console bundles. Good luck and feel free to drop me a message with any questions or just chat π

Back then I was young and didn't know the difference. My best friend told me he was getting a master system so we should have the same. in reality he was getting a mega drive and didn't want me having the same so he could appear superior. Anyway I quickly realised lots of my other friends had master systems and we had a great time playing and trading games. whilst this happened my ex best friend sat alone with his mega drive lol. Owch! Sneaky little b*d ππ€£ I remember having one of those annoying friends that had far too much money, always had the very latest consoles, games, gadgets and toys. He had the Megadrive / Mega CD at the time when most of us were stilling playing SMS and C64 games. It was annoying how much he used to brag about it, but at the same time I probably wouldn't have even see this stuff up-close if it wasn't for him. Then I remember my best friend who had no console getting an Atari 2600 for Christmas around 91 after he had asked for a SMS. Felt bad for that guy!
