I've come up with a rough outline for the competition.
There will be 6 rounds consisting of 3 knock-out rounds and 3 individual rounds. Everybody's place will be determined (1st-8th) and points will be given on what place you come. The person with the most points at the end of all the rounds will be the winner.
Knock-outs Micro Machines - head to head races. Fun game which several people have asked for Double Dragon - when you complete this game in 2-player mode, you have to fight each other to the death for the girl (which I think is genius). There's a bat up for grabs and plenty of space to run away so I think this will be fun. Sport game - not sure which. I was thinking Speedball 2, Tecmo World Cup or Sensible Soccer?
Individual Putt & Putter - chosen by popular demand. Best/lowest score over a particular few holes? Shooter - high score (either till game over or particular level). Power Strike maybe? Any suggestions? Platformer - time attack. Any suggestions?
I think this is a decent mix of genres and types of rounds. This is just my idea though, feel free to give your input and suggestions.

I suggest time attack on Alex Kidd: The Lost Stars. It's short, reasonably forgiving, not random and the best way to play it anyway.
How long will the Double Dragon take? You can't have everyone complete it?!?
Needs more Pie Slap. A gun game might be interesting, more so than sports for me...
It'd be better to avoid games where memory is a key feature. Many won't have practised enough to have memorised things.
My offer stands to work on some custom hacks (e.g. time attack stopwatch/level select/etc) if we can get them playable on real hardware.

California Games? Which also has the merit of handling up to 8 players competition by itself.
I would also enjoy competing on My Hero or Comical Machine Gun Joe

Well I'm definitely out. Was already borderline as I said with me running a 10k the next morning, but I also got through a wedding invite for the whole day on the Saturday (the 18th) for an old school / university friend's wedding. I knew his wedding was around then, but actually thought it was the week after. Funnily enough it's actually at the same place I got married last year...

Well we have 8 attendees, 9 if Bock makes it, which I think is a good number for such a specialist event. Ian - are you able create some kind of scoring chart based on these numbers for the games comp? Maybe not quite as complex as you last one Do we need tp start thinking about who is bring what? I think we need at least 4 Master Systems, maybe 5 so we have a back up. I could bring two of them. Then perhaps another couple of systems to spice things up a bit.. Any suggestions? Does anyone think its worth bringing along an interesting item from your collection just for others to have a look at in person? For example I brought along a few bits and bobs to our last event i.e. The new TecToy Master System and Air Rescue proto, cant remember if brought my kiosk along too? Can't remember what other people have in their collections.. I know I would love to see that Moonwalker game and VHS blister that ninja has

I did a bit of research into this kind of competition and I reckon we ought to go with a double elimination tournament - it gives you a chance to screw up and gives you a chance to progress a bit even if you're drawn against ian in the first round... it's quite common in video game competitions, apparently. There's some crappy Word documents here: www.crowsdarts.com/brackets/tourn.htmlwhich would do for us, we could print out a few pages and we can fill in names in random order. Edit: challonge.com seems pretty nifty for this stuff.

This looks like a fun list . Power Strike is a great choice of shmup too as you can either risk an early death by upgrading the powerful original weapon or try and work your way forward by using some of the powered up time based weapons! Speedball 2 is fun too, especially in 2 player. As for the platformer type game, how a bout a speedrun of a level from Digger Chan? Aypok and Playgen have a bit of an advantage obviously, but I reckon it would be fun because of all the devious traps put in there! I'd also like to see a light gun game and maybe a 3D game too. I can bring anything that's needed, just let me know before hand. I have loads of systems and at least one of each controller and game. And if you really want to see the Moonwalker blister I'll bring that along too .

I was thinking about bringing my Nes (boo!) along with Battle Kid to play on it - which should provide a nice challenge even for the gaming champs.

Just thought of something I wouldn't mind bringing, and asking others to bring too.
I have a selection of orphaned manuals and inserts that really could do with a home. I also have a selection of SMS games I need manuals for, surely we can get some simple swaps going on and CIB a few of our games?

Hey guys. The event's only a week away now so I'd like to get the competition finalised. Is everyone happy with this?
Round 1 - Micro Machines - Knock-out system Round 2 - Putt & Putter - Lowest score over holes 4-6 Round 3 - Double Dragon - Knock-out system Round 4 - Power Strike - Highest score. First level only Round 5 - Speedball 2 - Knock-out system Round 6 - Teddy Boy - Time attack. Second level.
It would make it so much easier if there were 8 people competing instead of 9. Is anyone not particularly bothered if they don't play in the competition? If everyone is up for it then I don't mind stepping down (give you lot a chance :-p)
I intend to use emulation and save states to run the comp. Hopefully this way we can get through it quicker.

Sounds like a good line-up to me, I'll probably not much (if any) time to practice playing any of them mind, so I doubt I'll be much competition for anyone
