Got to be Astro Warrior for me. It was the first game I played on my SMS. I had never really been exposed to video games before, except for a Binatone, which I bought at a jumble sale. It had a short life in my house as my dad put some cheap batteries into it, they leaked, and it was thrown away (These days I would have saved it no doubt!)
I forgot about games after that, until we went on holiday and there was a small arcade which had Space Invaders, Galaga, Pac man etc. It must have been around 1986/87. I remember I really enjoyed playing those games, but never really knew home-gaming was a thing.
I remember waking up in what seemed like the middle of the night, with strange noises coming from the living room. I knew my mum was away working nights, so dad was up to something. I opened the door to find him playing Astro Warrior. He didn't try to hide it, instead invited me to have a game. I was hooked, but I wasn't supposed to see this until Christmas day, so we made a deal to not tell my mum.. It was also the thing that made me realise there was no Santa Claus, but I didn't care anymore. I was getting a Master System for Xmas! I'll never forget the first time I ever beat Zanoni on my own and seeing those immortal engrish words.... Surely Revive Zanoni!!!!
We had a great Christmas that year with our SMS, I also got Choplifter, Space Harrier and Shinobi and went on to choose my very own first game from Virgin Megastore - Alien Syndrome, purely on the strength of a single screenshot and awesome cover-art (compared to other early titles!)
Knowing what I do now, my dad must have purchased the Dixons "exclusive" system that came with HangOn/Astro Warriror (but annoyingly no box for it) and got the Control stick for £10 when he bought the system.
Good memories! Good games! Good times!
A really nice memory you got there😊 I have never played videogames with my dad , and sometimes I wish we had some of that kind of quality time, but now I take the time to have them fun hours with the old consoles, with my own kids now and they just love it when we do it👍
