I also found this group hard to decide. I finally chose Ottifants, Desert Strike and Sagaia.
R-Type looks great, but I think the designers could do something better in full page like Sagaia.

My selections for group D:
Sagaia - I mean... it's just undeniably badass. The illustrator has mastered their medium, and they're flexing with some seriously cool creature/robot designs that are brimming with detail. Color, lighting, perspective, motion... the Taito logo is sort of shoehorned in there, but even the Taito logo is cool.
Rainbow Islands - an image with great appeal for the younger set, filled with fascinating details for kids to gaze at on the way home from the store.
R-Type - gritty, disgusting, exciting. I love it. I like the fact that they went with the coin-op logo. The R-9 is such a cool ship and this image affords us an opportunity to get a good look at it.
My honorable mentions: Lemmings - has a Where's Waldo appeal with lots of interesting characters to look at. Psychic World - possibly the same illustrator as Running Battle? Stiff pose, but dynamic perspective. Speedball 2 - a very realistic look at how this game will make you feel (and that's a good thing). Micro Machines - a cool image, a bit cluttered with quotes and badges.

I voted for it because it's awesome but Sagaia's cover is a bit of a cheat. It's not originally from the game but rather it's promotional art for arcade game Darius - Sagaia is the sequel.
Operation Wolf on the SMS does similar and uses promotional art for sequel Operation Thunderbolt.

I went with Sonic the Hedgehog, Speedball II and Sagaia.
Runners up for me were Castle of Illusion, R Type, and Micro Machines. To be fair this was a really strong group with just a couple of bad ones - Sonic Blast and Bonanza Bros.
I think Sagaia has potential to get through to the final actaully.

I went with X-men, Psychic World, and Desert Strike. I will admit being a former comic geek may have clouded my judgment on X-men. Does anyone else think Psychic World should more appropriately be named PSYCHO WORLD? I've never played the game but I have always thought it was a great cover. Is it a good game? I realize this is as subjective of a question as voting on the artwork itself.... One last comment on this game/cover art, Is it me or does the green lion/dragon thing look an awful lot like the dog/dragon from the Never Ending Story? I think his name was Valcor or something like that.

The Lion/Dragon thing is the first boss, you fight a giant monster at the end of each stage and pick up power ups and upgrades along the way. It's a game that never gets mentioned, which is a shame because it's well worth playing unlike a lot of so called classics.

How the hell is Sagaia winning this? I mean, the art is great, but it's meaningless! If you look at just that cover, do you have a single clue what in the hell is happening?

What the hell is going on? Another game I don't have and I am curious if it is any good. I have considered buying it before because it has such a dark/warped cover art.

What's up with the rabbit on Champions of Europe? Was he a "mascot" of the UEFA cup at one time?

What's up with the rabbit on Champions of Europe? Was he a "mascot" of the UEFA cup at one time? Yeah pretty sure about that. Sagaia is a great game, from what I remember, but the art gives no clue what you're in for.

And it's not clear the ships are, in fact, ships. The fish could be any old thing really. Maybe they're deep sea fish and this is some sort of diving game!
