So, this year ian's left it to me to organise the competition, so I thought I'd throw in some old ideas and start some discussion. So here goes.
Ground rules
Each round should be in a game that's reasonably accessible, as approximately nobody ever practices. If you can't be 90% good at it with a few minutes' practice, it's not much fun to compete.
I'd like some departure from previous years; in particular I'm excluding Micro Machines and Pie Slap, because I always win at them.
Inventive ideas get extra credit.
Suggestion 1: a competition cart
This is an idea I've been knocking around, but I can't promise to actually achieve it. Similar to the Nintendo World Championship cartridges of 1990, this is a cartridge that flips between a few games, with an overall time limit and a total score at the end; as a totally made up example, you play round 1 of Alex Kidd in Miracle World, then the first stage of Out Run, and then you play Columns until the total time reaches 5 minutes; then you score is the amount of money in AKIMW x 1000000 + your score in Out Run + your score in Columns. (Multiply numbers up until they balance a bit.)
This would involve hacking the games, adding some timing, switching and scoring code. This is kind of hard to do, so if I don't manage it, it doesn't happen (unless someone else can do it).
The cartridge could be a prize for the competition. It might even be a Master Everdrive..?
Suggestion 2: Secret platformer speedrun
Speedruns benefit a lot from practice, so like last year I think it'd be good to have it announced on the day. Except this year, it'd be on purpose
Suggestion 3: Missile Defense 3-D
If we can pull together the hardware, I'd like to have a play on this game, and it really showcases the SMS's addon peripherals. Do we have enough people willing to bring the hardware to pull it off? We can use the modern 3D glasses if people are afraid of breaking the originals. I own none of the above.
Suggestion 4: Something on an SG-1000
Last year was it was interesting to play the SG-1000, it was surprisingly horrible to use the controllers so I think it would be amusing to play something 2-player on there. Maybe Bock can provide the goods again.
Suggestion 5: Something homebrew
Not sure what will be good here - if someone has something up their sleeve to surprise everyone, that'd be good too. (Digger Chan 2?)
Suggestion 6: Something on a Game Gear
I'm not sure how Game Geary the regulars are, but maybe we'll get some new people with hardware. There's loads of 2-player simultaneous GG games, but of course you need two carts and not many people keep multiple copies around. I have no idea what's good, either.
I'd love to have a go on Micro Machines as it does two players on one GG, but I've already disallowed that
There's plenty of room for new ideas, and most of these lack the fine details...
