I was wondering what the original prices on various master system stuff was when they were brand new in the shops. How much was a sms on launch, the first batch of games, and accessories like the sports pad and handle controller?. Id be interested to know prices in Uk, US and anywhere else too, can anybody think of some?

I remember all the "Great" titled games and their ilk, world soccer, world grand prix etc were priced at £9.99. The bigger releases were at about £29.99 I paid that for Castle of illusion and Lucky Dime Caper (worth every penny) and I think Card Games were £9.99 too.
I seem to remember my first sms 1 costing £79.99 (which meant it was a birthday and christmas present). I never bought any acessories for the sms. I had the light gun bundled and 2 pads so when they broke I used Mega drive ones from a mate.

I think about $50 for titles in the US and maybe around $100 for the systems.

When I got it it was £30, but that was about 1994. All the games I got 2nd hand through mates/shops for £5ish, as I was only 7 and couldnt really afford any of them new, but by then Megadrive and SNES were king so I dont even remember seeing any games new, as the SMS was old hat by then.

I think the UK launch price was £99.99. The games were originally between £15-£25, though this later rose to £30 or so for some of the larger carts.

Am i right in thinking Phantasy star, and possibly some other RPG games were a fair bit more expensive than regular games, possibly because of the battery back up. I could be wrong but i think i saw PS for £40

Yeah, Phantasy Star was pricier, though I'm not sure how much. I'll probablky be able to find out if/when I find the time to look through the rest of that C&VG archive...

Back when I first got my SMS I think the system was around £100 for the Hang On/Safari Hunt, two joypad, light phaser package. As for the games new releases were £29.99, cards and games such as The Ninja, F-16, Teddy Boy and Super tennis were £9.99, I'm sure new joypads were £7.99. The highest price I saw an SMS game on sale for was £32.99 for Cool Spot. Within the first few years of having my SMS the second hand prices used to be about £15 - £17 for a complete game.
