A few years back Gamestation stores were selling most SMS games for £1.99 buy one get one free. I would say perhaps 150 to 200 of my games were from Gamestation (perhaps replaced quite a few with upgrades from ebay bundles since). I was lucky that I live between liverpool and Manchester with towns like Wigan, Leigh, Bolton, Bury, St.Helens and Warrington all close by (thats about 9 or 10 Gamestations within easy reach). Some of the best bargains I got from there were James Buster Douglous Boxing, most of the Cassics and Kixx, Dragon The Bruce Lee Story, Buggy Run (x2), Championship Hockey and US Power Strike. Times are defo tougher for collectors now I must have bought 50 games easily from Gamestation, it was a great time. Interdependent game shops used to carry SMS games before then too, but the combination of Gamestation and Game on the high-street killed them all off here. I also got the likes of Buggy Run, Championship Hockey etc for £1 each, it was really exciting coming across games like that. Even if Gamestation still stocked retro, I bet all the resellers around now would clear it out before anyone else had a chance.

I imagine back then you never appreciated it, as it was just the norm. And thanks PJ ;D

I certainly did appreciate it, buying a game that would get £30 on ebay for £1 was awesome, even if they fetch a whole lot more now

The rarer games will only get rarer and more expensive, but its not something to get too annoyed over really. You can get most of the best games on the console for peanuts, the likes of Castle of Illusion, Asterix, Lucky Dime Caper, Sonic etc can be bought in perfect condition for a couple of pounds.

Well it is annoying if you want a full PAL set. But i guess when you get down to those last few rarity's. You just build up a war chest of cash, and go all in when they come up.

Look at what SNES collectors dish out now for the likes of Mega Man and others... Going over 1000£ isn't uncommon anymore.

Where is the time I used to go three times a week at my local cash converters and find, every single time, games I didn't own

How the hell is Mega Man that rarer Mega Man X2 and X3 aren't that rare. Sometimes it's not the rarity of a game, but the demand that drives the price up. Very true i find that with the likes of Golden axe warrior, the Alex kid games and phantasy star.

Popular games are usually in demand so even though they are common they will still command more money. A lot of rare games aren’t actually that good so are only really sought after by collectors. That’s why I don’t think the rarity list needs to be updated. Values have gone up for sure, but the comparative rarity of the games in relation to each other is about the same.

Things like T2 Arcade are listed as being an 8. When it's not even a rare game, let alone a very rare game. F1 is rated as a 5, Deep Duck Trouble 4, Astro Warrior/Pit Pot 5, George Foreman's KO Boxing 4, Bram Stoker's Dracula, 5. Just picking some examples at random that are questionable.

Just picking some examples at random that are questionable. I would say that those are all fairly accurate except perhaps T2 Arcade (not that rare) and Astro Warrior/Pit Pot (rarer). Ultimately rarity lists are only a guideline. They are very useful for starting out, but after a while you no longer refer to them as your own experience is a better guide. I think the benefits would be marginal given the amount of work that went into the original list.
