I've long wanted to get into old school RPGs but have never really "got" them. I don't really know much about them - can anyone give me some basic outline not of the story, but of how they "work"?
So I recently picked up Phantasy Star, known for being a great SMS RPG so thought I'd give this one a try. My history with RPGs isn't good, I've played (and loved) the DS Zelda games, as well as the RPG on Retrogame Challenge which is really as far as I've got. Any advice appreciated.
Edit: So, I've just started off, taked to a few NPCs including some Stormtroopers (LOL) and got warned about leaving the area. Will have a nose around and hopefully work out how to save...
Edit: "First" Food shop - haha.

Well I haven't personally played Phantasy Star (it's a sin I know), but two general tips I use on RPGs are to be well prepared before leaving with potions. And even though it's time consuming and menial, level up quite a bit before going on the story mode. The latter tip doesn't always work especially if the enemies are adjusted based on your level (like in Final Fantasy 2 if I remember correctly), but is often just a good thumb rule. Edit: oh and if all else fails and you end up dying to many times, just use an action replay, that always works

Welcome to the greatest game known to man! I would do what batman said and work on leveling up a bit before trying to venture far. It's ok that you leave the area and explore a bit but I would just walk around close to home so you can go back and heal and save. At the start I would save the game often because you can easily spend a lot of time leveling just to die and lose that time spent leveling. This is a great site for tips and hints. www.phantasy-star.net/This is a hint sheet from Sega that will give you the basics of what to do next. www.smstributes.co.uk/hintsheets/sega_hints_1/Phantasy_Star.pdfBut yeah, at low levels just remember to travel back to town, heal at the orange house above the church and save the game then go do a few more fights and go back heal and save. You also need to save up a bit of cash at the start. Another good tip is to carry an escaper and a transfer which can be bought in shops. If you get into a fight that you don't think you can handle you can use the escaper to get away and the transfer will warp you back to the last church you were at. Once you level up quite a bit Alis and Myau will learn those two as spells so you won't have to spend money on them anymore but they'll use magic points so remember to save some points in case you get into a jam and want to get back to heal and save. I love this game so feel free to send me a PM if you want to know about something.

Thanks guys, I appreciate it - reading the manual it says to make notes of where stuff is, so think I'm going to do that also otherwise I'll forget where stuff is and even where I'm supposed to be going.
Am right at the beginning of the game at the mo - I went it that first mini dungeon thing (I have to say, I'm mega impressed by the smoothness of the animation) and got the money from the chest. Think I'm supposed to be going to get someone from my party, Odin or something?

Most of the eighties RPG’s required you to do a lot of grinding and Phantasy Star is no exception. Be prepared to spend a lot of time getting you character levels up near the beginning of the game and keep a good supply of healing items. Keeping a set of notes is also a good idea. I believe Ninjabearhug was working through Phantasy Star a little while back so he might have some notes he could share with you.

I believe Ninjabearhug was working through Phantasy Star a little while back so he might have some notes he could share with you. Yeah, got to the last boss (I think), got owned, chucked it to one side. I just need to level up and make sure I have all the best armour and weapons equipped and stuff next time. I didn't know how far into the game I was until I got there as I wasn't using a guide. Anyway, tips. If you've never really been into old RPG's, then prepare for the game to be quite boring, there's lots of levelling up to be done before you start out on the quest or you just get owned. If you use a walkthrough the game is gonna be a walk in the park, the only difficult part really is finding your way through the dungeons, the rest is self explanitory. I personally don't get the appeal of this kind of game, I've even gone through and done it the hard way and mapped all the dungeons myself and stuff in the hope of some sort of feeling of achievement or something when I finish it, but I know it's not gonna happen. I was bored from the offset because of the grinding and have been bored all the way through since. I'm gonna finish it, but I keep getting sidetracked by games that are actually fun to play, I know I've got a few more hours of boring random battles ahead of me before I can finish it. Nice graphics though .

You'll get Myau first and shortly after you get Odin to join.
I guess I shouldn't have said greatest game known to man because it's not first on my list of favorites either but it is a great game. Just keep in mind you're mainly in it for the story because the truth is, you most likely will get bored while playing. I like this type of game for a change of pace now and then. I feel the older RPG's have a good balance of play/story. I've been playing one of the newer Phantasy Star games and the story mode gets really boring. You seriously get stuck reading for 15-20 minutes at a time, it's like just let me play the game already!

Eeep, ok I was going to go get Odin first. So far I've been messing (grinding) on Palma, level 5 with Iron Sword and Light Suit. I was going to go get Odin first (from Medusa cave cios someone said he went there?). I assume Mayau is the talking beast that was sold to a merchant - but where is Paso? I've not heard anyone mention it yet. I am enjoying this Reckon I have a bit of OCD so feel compelled to grind to improve my stats!! Noob question... sometimes the enemies have two sets of HP - is this because there are two of them? It's just that only one appears on screen? See I really am an RPG noob!

You'll need something Myau has to get Odin. Myau is the beast or whats known as a Musk Cat. You need to save up $200 and then go to a town located a bit east of where you start. One shop will have an item named secrets and you have to try and buy it three times and then you get a roadpass that will let you past the Stormtroopers to get to another planet and get Myau. You'll have to buy a passport before going to get Myau which is another $100.
You're exactly right, if an enemy has multiple sets of HP that means how many of them there are and how many times you'll be attacked.

No problem. Hey you might like seeing this, they did a remake of Phantasy Star a few years back in Japan. It's cool to see how they changed it. The bad news is it's only in Japanese and as far as I know nobody has done a translation.
Here's the scene of getting Myau.

And then they released a compliation of all the phantasy star games in english and japanese in sega ages vol. 32, but they are sadly the original games and not the remade ones.... Hopefully they eventually release at least the first 3 remade games in english. From what I hear, they were planning on releasing a compilation of all 4 remade games in english, but then the remake of phantasy star iv was scratched, so the english release never happened....

I see that collection on ebay now and then. I didn't realize it was the old games, I didn't keep up with the info on them after finding out they wouldn't be in english so I guess I assumed IV was remade. I got the remake of part one and tried to play it, seeing I know the story it didn't seem like a big deal to play in Japanese but the real problem is figuring out what is what in the menu when you need a certain item. I'm still bummed about them not being in english. Edit: The PlayStation 2 title includes all four classic Genesis/Master System RPGs as well as eight Phantasy Star II text adventures Sega released online in the 1990s. That's cool it includes the 8 online text games but just another reason to be mad it's not in english.
