...is that guy tough or what? I finished this game last night and were it not for Opa Opa's dad at the end, it would have been a very fair game with a nice learning curve. Once you reach the final boss, you can go to the shop first, and then you replay all the other bosses once more. That's cool, and a challenge since a few of them are a little tricky. The problem is that the last boss is instantly much, much harder than the one before it. Basically, little ships shoot out of the giant Papa Opa, and it becomes like Snake with them leaving a tail of destruction behind them that you have to avoid while trying to shoot the head. Every other boss can quite reasonably be finished off with just the twin shot, but there is absolutely no way that can be accomplished with this boss. After the first couple snakes, it just goes way too fast to kill.
Another hitch that comes with the whole final boss thing (and this extends to all the other bosses in this final run) is that because of the second last boss (the frowning rectangle guy that keeps taking himself a part and building himself on top of you) Opa Opa needs to be able to shoot in both directions. Other than this boss, during regular level play the game thankfully defaults to having Opa only being able to shoot forward, which makes it easy to back up to avoid debris while still shooting forward at all times. Because of that second last boss though, whenever you move backwards during the endurance round final, you'll shoot backwards. This makes every single boss a lot tougher to defeat, especially the end boss since you really have to back up often and the snake moves so fast that by the time you back up and turn around to shoot you've already wasted too much time.
The only way I could complete the final boss, and I played him a number of times, was to use the 7 way shot, stand in front of Papa for the first three guys, back-up and shoot again for the fourth and then make sure I was as far back as I could go and dead center in the vertical axis to get the snake that just shoots out at you. That last snake is uncompromising - it will hit you no matter what unless you are firing at it the whole time and you kill it before it darts at you. It's insane.
It was worth it all, though, for that awesome text ending that again like Aztec Adventure pulls a 180 on the cliche and makes you question the very nature of the sensationalist things we do in video games. It was primitive, with no animation whatsoever, but for a launch game even a story that rich is still a major accomplishment considering the time it was made.
Basically this thread was so I could rant on the final boss in Fantasy Zone (I'm surprised it isn't even a game of the week, although the other two games in the SMS franchise are). We can extend this to an overall talk of Fantasy Zone though, I'd love to hear what you others think about the game.

Is this Fantasy Zone I or II?
I finished both, but have a stronger feeling for part II. I both hate it and love it. Why? Because of it's difficulty!
I remember the damn pole boss...rotating faster and faster. Took me a LONG time to figure out a trick to beat him. And the last round...now that was a doozy!
I was able to finish the game without ever getting hit. Now I know I will loose miserably...
Has anyone finished The Maze?

Oh, a question for you Fantasy Zone devotees - were bosses created specifically for the SMS version? I've been playing the Sega Ages update on PS2, and a few of the bosses are different. There's a two headed serpent on the blue level in the PS2 version, while in the SMS version it's a fish that sheds its teeth. Then, instead of the incredibly hard eye boss on the PS2 version, we get a turtle who shoots out blue shards from his back. The PS2 version purports to being like the arcade, but I have to wonder which is more accurate, and why they would have changed those bosses for the SMS version, since neither were overly complex (in fact, the eye was probably less complex than the turtle on the SMS). Can anyone shine a light?

Ah Groit the last boss is a piece of cake. You can defeat him with your normal shot, a reasonably fast engine and a heavy bomb for the very last errr thing that fires out.
I always found that turtle boss a bit of a nightmare.
Perhaps we should have a new thread on the most difficult boss on the SMS?

As grolt, I remember that the final boss is hard to beat. To defeat it, I use speed and powerfull laser (turbo engine/laser beam) but it is not an optimized way. Looking at this speed gaming, I say to myself that I had to buy more heavy bomb... fr.youtube.com/watch?v=OJlWEKa70Xg

Perhaps we should have a new thread on the most difficult boss on the SMS? I always thought the final boss on AKSW was pretty tough, you need excellent timing to get him. Not played much of Fantasy Zone but this thread make me want to whip it out! (Fantasy Zone I mean)

Not played much of Fantasy Zone but this thread make me want to whip it out! (Fantasy Zone I mean) Haha, glad you clarified it was Fantasy Zone, otherwise this thread could have got dirty! ;D To be honest, I've never even used any of the special bombs. I rarely even use my bomb, other than on that boss with all the shooting lasers. Still, even with a bomb upgrade, it's kind of cheap that you have to do it that way rather than beat him using skilled timing and movement like the other bosses.

Hey, that's my video ;D I use heavy bombs on almost all the bosses, they are quick and easy. You can get unlimited amount of weapon 1 by buying all four engine upgrades and you automatically get whatever your weapon 1 is unlimited. It is kind of cheap to do it that way though; it is harder to beat it the normal way. But yes, a few heavy bombs are helpful for the last boss as seen in the video. I love Fantasy Zone, one of my favorite games of all time.

Holy...now that's an awesome tactic!
Any tips for beating the boss pole from Part II? I can do it by using bombs and staying REALLY close to the boss...

I'm not near as good at II than I am at the first one, so not really. Are you talking about the boss to level oneāthe tree stump? Or another one?

coenak, my friend, that's a great play through. That video converted me on the power of the bomb, for sure! You made the turtle dude and the laser shooting sphere look so easy. I'm playing Fantasy Zone II now, and so far my strategy is for using bombs on the early levels just like the video - it's working well, but yeah, that game is way more challenging than the first!
I love the rest of your videos, too, keep it up, man!

I love Fantasy Zone, one of my favorite games of all time. Unlimited weapon 1??? I never knew that.! Have to admit though, that the fastest engine is TOO fast. Jet engine is usually enough. I generally use the heavy bomb only on the boss that shoots teeth??? from his tongue/mouth and for the last boss. No need to waste your money on the others as only the turtle is tough. I tend to use my normal shot and twin bombs on him at the same time. I love FZ. Is number 2 as good?

I love FZ. Is number 2 as good? It is and it isn't. The graphics are a definite step up - it's a beautiful game that's even more colorful than the original and with much more sprite detail. It introduces a few new gameplay mechanics, like having to hit "warps" on each level, so essentially each level is three times as big as a comparable level in the first game. The warps change the strategy a little, too, since you can often use them as escape mechanisms when the action gets too frenzied on screen. Another new addition is that on later levels you get a power meter allowing more than one hit before dying. Considering that there are way more enemies this time around, trust me, that's a good thing! I haven't made it all the way through, but from what I've played the bosses are equally as memorable. The second one is particularly fun, having to shoot away parts of his caterpillar body. There's also a fun ice block boss, too. It's a much tougher game, though. Made even tougher because it doesn't have the cheats of the first game, either.

I always preferred part II over part I. I think it was easier (!!!!) than part 1 by a long shot. However, it requires plenty more practice than with the first game. The power meter also helps matters too...by collecting those colored vases, you can increase your health bar, so that suffering this won't mean certain death. The boss I am referring to is this one: fr.youtube.com/watch?v=OlO2u5qKv_E&feature=relatedThe boss, the pole boss from level 7. I cna defeat him by staying REALLY close to him, on the tom of the screen, while dropping bombs like crazy. Otherwise, know of an easier way? (btw, I know this is not the SMS game per se, but it's the same boss). HOLY **** I NEED THIS!!!! fr.youtube.com/watch?v=B71Cqw1ZEFQA remake!? It looks miles different! The first boss encounter made me cringe on how hard it must be to avoid the logs! It was never like that one the SMS! Also, the shops are no longer static...they are just like the first game! And...NO ENERGY BAR!!! NOW THIS GAME MUST BE MURDER TO PLAY! I WANT IT!!!!!!!
