Ohh FZ2 looks really good. Had a chance to buy it for a few quid a while ago and didn't because it wasn't mint. Now regretting it as can't find it anywhere.

I always preferred part II over part I. I think it was easier (!!!!) than part 1 by a long shot. Same here (on both points). I haven't played the second one in a few months, so I may be remembering it wrongly...

If you enjoyed the first, I would definitely recommend the second. It is the same style and all good fun, but it is different enough as well. A lot of new goodies too, like hidden items and shops, transporting to different parts of the same level, more health bar (you can get shot more than once and not blow-up!), and new crazy enemies, levels and colors. No need to get Fantasy Zone: The Maze though, unless you like Pac-Man a lot. At least I never was able to fall in love with The Maze like I did with I and II, but perhaps others have.

Haven't you guys purchased the new Fantasy Zone II remake already?
Anyway, back to the first Fantazy Zone - the boss is perfectly doable with regular shot and single bomb, just have to know its pattern and sit and hit at the right place at the right time.
The reason they changed the eye and dual snake boss: they are indeed much more complex to dipslay than the turtle. Their moving parts would requires to use individual sprites, but unfortunately there's a limitation of 8 sprites per scanline on the SMS. The blue thing is mostly layed out horizontally and the eye also when it reach angles multiple of 90 degrees. In those cases most of the boss would just disappear or horribly flicker if displayed on the SMS.
