Hey there I recently thought I'd buff out some of the scratches from my 25+ year old SMS with some meguiars plastx... Unfortunately I went a bit too rough on it and removed the texture on one area.. but even worse the colour has faded, it's not a deep black anymore it's like a greyish black as seen on photo, the part under the logo: Iv tried everything from back to black to wd40 to try and restore the original colour but no luck :/ I know I could easily replace the lid from another console but I'm sorta sentimental about it as it's been in my family for a long time lol i realise there's no way of getting the original texture back but if there's an effective way of restoring the colour without spraypainting the console that will be good enough and I'll learn my lesson next time If you can help please let me know!

one solution, build a time machine, go back in time and stop yourself from buffing your console!! That might cause a paradox and play havoc with the space time continuum, so be warned!!!

Yeah, sorry man, barring Phil's idea, which will work mind you, there is nothing you can do other than paint it when you have the plastic faded like that. You might find household oil restores some of it (like what you'd use for gears in clocks), but really once you damage that color there's no going back.

I think if you paint it might be worse. I suggest leaving it as it is.
I'm sure you have many memories with this console, so now you have one more. You must be happy that you still have your 25+ year old SMS!

Yeah I think I agree with you mate. and yeah the machine means a lot to me it was my sisters originally who is now 41 so it was past down to me in the 90's when I was growing up

Back to black does help somewhat aslong as you don't buff it out. I think it puts a little coating on it which seems to work

This may seem odd but this thread got me thinking... I was filing down the cart opening on my Megadrive 2 so I could fit my Japanese carts in- I slipped and put a bit of a scratch on it -much to my annoyance! My question is.....what can I use to buff it out?
