It's been ages since we've had a new game for the Game Club so I've done the honours of selecting a new game. This time round we have: Predator 2 I feel this game is seriously under-appreciated and never gets mentioned ever. It was never a game I had owned or even played growing up. I've always loved the film so I looked forward to giving it a go when I picked it up in my later years. I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. It plays very well and I think the graphics and controls are impressive. It's side-scrolling shoot-em-up type of game and pretty unique, as I can't think of another game like it. You have to gun down drug-dealers, confiscate their drugs and save hostages. All the while trying to avoid the Predator asassinating you and the hostages (represented by his iconic three red dots targeting system). There's a nice range of weapons, bosses and plenty of destruction. It's a fairly challenging game but overall pretty enjoyable. It's far from perfect though. Some downsides in my opinion include: unmemorable music, scarcity of weapons and repetitiveness (the Street level appears 3 times). I'd recommend people giving it a fair try. I'll think you'll be surprised how good it is once you get into it.

I have to disagree here. In my oppinion this is just another generic licensed game with next to real effort put into it. Let's start with the obvious: The graphics aren't great. Mostly dark, dull and bland. Streets of Rage did a way better job doing the urban look. The animations aren't great. On the positive side, when you switch weapons, they do so on the character too. That's nice. When we go to music and sound, again, it's pretty bland. The sound effective are the same gun sounds heard in every other master system game and the music, at least in my oppinion, just doesn't fit the dark mood of the stages and could've been used in a bunch of generic plattformers without sounding out of place. The blandless and "It's really just a license cash-in" continues with the levels. 7 Levels. You get the same Street scene 3 times with no changes at all. Best levels are 4 (the subway) and 7 (predator ship) which are not creative but at least a change of scenery. Also the final boss battle is a complete joke. The game has a medium to high difficulty overall, but that last battle is so easy and quickly over it's anticlimatic. And finally, the gameplay. There's so much wrong here i don't even know where to begin with. It starts with one of the biggest annoyances of isometric games: Everything works fine horizontally but the developers always screw up the vertical plane. Since the hitboxes are completely wrong (flat), you take hits where you shouldn't take them. It's annoying in those small passages where you simply can't avoid getting some cheap hits. On the other hand, horizontal shooting for the player is also weird. You have to stand below the target to hit it. It's very obvious with the manholes you have to shoot in the street levels. The snipers from the windows are annoying, since it seems you only can hit them with grenades. So you constantly switch around weapons to kill them, then shoot enemies left and right, then take a cheap hit because suddenly a enemy pops up from below and the crude vertical hit detection kicks in. Another thing of video game past is that weapons don't move from one level to the next. You just start with the cheapest gun and have to start collecting again. Also the whole premise is just wrong. First you fight the drug cartell that was also featured in the movie and then the Predators making it look like they're working together. That makes no sense. It would've been a lot more creative and close to the movie if the Predator Laser Tag that pops up would not only kill you but also the cartel guys. It's one game where i'm not mad at all that it was banned here in Germany. At least that way a lot of children were prevented from buying and playing this crap

I bought this a while ago because, though dark, the graphics looked decent and it was a shooter. Played it once, completed it first time out and eventually sent it packing to the local charity shop.
I'm not adverse to easy games if they're fun but this was repetitive and barely enjoyable. And I normally love shooting games.

Never played this before, loaded it up in Meka and...
Wow. That was awful.
As a run & gun, it's not that bad I guess, unfortunately it's not that good either. Pickups are way too scarce, I found all kinds of guns on level 1. I used them throughout the level and lobbed every grenade at the cab. Apparently I was supposed to spare them out a little, because after that there were next to NO pickups in level 2 and maybe a few more in level 3. The crappy shooting physics as mentioned above, that pseudo 3D angle, with no real depth regarding a bullet passing by; collision detection IS pixel perfect, but not in a good way!
As a game based on Predator 2? It's downright awful... if not for the trio of red dots occasionally appearing you would never know this was based on said movie! I made it to the subway, and after a few deaths I just quit... I got to see a Predator though! Two actually, and they were the easiest enemies in the level. The gang members swarm you and can drain your health in no time if you're not careful, plus a bunch of them shoot like mad... The Predator? He just walked straight toward me, right into my line of fire, and I think he even fell after less bullets than some of the gang members. I lost my first life on that level... to a bird. A bird... in a subway... in Los Angeles... A Bird was the deadliest thing I'd come across after fighting Drug Fueled Street Thugs and The Predator... guess it was all those years hanging out in subways that toughened it up...
So after dropping two Predators easier than ANYTHING so far in the game, I meet the boss. A Leather Jacket wearing punk... My mistake, that must be a couple layers of Kevlar that jacket is made of, he absorbed SO many bullets, and he only appears VERY occasionally, while thugs are surrounding you, so when he appeared you either fended off the thugs, and he rode the subway a little more, or you took your chance and started shooting him, while the thugs wailed on you... that's when I turned it off...
Why? Why was The Predator a simple enemy just interspersed with the common bad guys, and a Thug was the Level Boss? Why? I know why, because he was the Trainer of that diabolical bird, and when he and his bird team up, The Alien, The Predator and The USMC together can't stop him. I kid, I'm sure he's not THAT hard, but after all I'd been through in that level, fighting that boss was just the frosting on the turd and I couldn't take anymore!
*Edit* Like the Genesis version I don't understand the "drugs". The bag of cocaine (or possibly heroin) was pretty obvious, but what's with the vial of blood and the thing that looks like a crumpled up newspaper? What are they???

Wow, that bird has dinosaur written all over him... Something reptilian and heartless anyway. It didn't even occur to at the time, I was just so shocked to see and be killed by a Bird as an enemy... in a subway no less... that I was just wandering the streets and rooftops in the levels prior... and no birds... only in the subway... the rooftop level would have made PERFECT sense... but no... common sense was tied to a rock and thrown out the window when they made this game... I'm sure this was a standard run & gun that just got the Predator license tacked on at the last minute. *EDIT* SUB-standard run & gun

Wow, I'm surprised to see so much hate. I know it's not a great game but I think it's reasonably playable. I chose it believing not many people would have given it a proper go before but it turns out it's not as overlooked as I thought. If people want to move on from this one, that's fine! Feel free to suggest a new game to discuss.

I completed it a few years ago and have good memories of it. I like the dark atmosphere and some music themes, but I also remember that the controls weren´t perfect (to change the weapon was difficult). The final battle was the only huge disappointment for me.

I think the game is of reasonable quality but only average, the graphics are at about 55% and gameplay too.
But I would not say its a bad game it can be frustrating though.
