Since I'm a SMS newbie, figured I would ask the pro's. Growing up I was used to the D-Pad that had the small black circle on the middle. Just recently I saw a SMS console traded in. It looked like a Model 1 except the D-Pads did NOT have the black circle in the middle. They were smoothed in the middle, not even the small screw hole for the black part. Was this an early or later release D-Pad? Just curious. Looks more comfortable.

The pad with the "smooth" middle would be a later release. There's a bit of info about the different pads here.

This has surely been discussed before, but I can't recall reading about it in my years on this forum.
But seeing as I have only had experience with the Model 3 type of controller. Were there a difference in durability with the earlier ones compared to the model 3? Seeing as the common problem I had with my SMS controllers were that the D-Pad would break off after a while and I had to tape it back on (still have my 20+ year old tape on my two original controllers).

As I mentioned in my other thread "*censored* SMS PAD!!!" I expressed my utter distaste for the stock SMS pad that comes with the SMS, but I've never used one with the optional thumb stick, and I never even knew about the 3rd revision that was with the SMSII. Do any of these have better D-Pad precision than the one that DOES have a circle in the middle but NOT an optional thumbstick? I have already modded some Genny controllers for SMS use, but I have always wanted to use the original style controllers. I know with the Genesis that by the time Model 2 was available the pack in controllers had greatly enhanced D-Pad precision, you can really feel the D-Pad 'click' into each direction and the pad has a rougher texture providing better grip(?), if it just had 6 buttons it'd be on par with the 6 Button Controller as the best controller ever made.

Well, this isn't exactly in answer to your question, but regarding the thumbsticks - I did get a set of them when I originally got my Master System in '87. Having grown up with the Atari 2600, I wasn't too sure about this new d-pad trend, so I tried out the thumbstick. But it was too small to effectively use as a joystick, and put too much concentrated pressure on one small part of my thumb if used that way, so although I thought it was neat that they provided the option, I put them away and never used them again.

Yeah the old Gravis Gamepads for PC had the little screw in thumbstick too. Hated it.
