I've had a thought in regards to the competition cart. Do you reckon it would be possible to balance the game and perhaps improve the presentation in time for the Play Expo in October? We could ask the Retro Collect guys to run a competition on it. They've done it with the NES and SNES World Championship carts the past 2 years. I thought it would be a cool and unique thing to do!

Looks like it was a great time! I enjoyed the write-up and video. And from what I could see, it looks like you guys have some awesome retro shops there in Manchester.

I'd need some help with playtesting on the competition cart. There are a few issues I need to improve (the scoring could do with proper maths, bad things happen if you run out of time before Columns), and adding graphics (and music) would be pretty easy if someone else can produce the assets. I've half a mind to swap out Columns for Dr Robotnik's as it's a far better game, and it might be nice to put something better (Out Run?) in the Hang On slot.
Whether I have the time is another issue...

And from what I could see, it looks like you guys have some awesome retro shops there in Manchester. the retro stores up here are overpriced, the two in the video were entertainment trader and one in afflecks palace that i cant remember the name of, spied the prices in entertainment trader and it looks expensive (goes along with what i have heard) and the one in afflecks is very expensive, i seem to remember there were some common games i had that were £20+ I am determined to find a decent retro store round here with decent prices, those two stores arent it though

Oh wow, that does sound expensive. I guess it just looks good to me because the shops in the last two (smallish) cities I've lived in have rarely had any Master System games at all, I've always got to go to a big city to find anything in shops. And I suppose shops often have to add in some extra expense to cover their overhead. The best prices I've found have been at special events, like annual retro gaming shows where a lot of vendors gather together.
But back to the topic at hand, I think it would be cool to Skype in when you guys hold the next annual event, if the time difference isn't too much.

I have a question ... I keep seeing mention of a competition cart. Is there actually one that someone created for the contest you guys had? I would be interested in seeing something like that!

It's usually a lot more reasonably priced than the ones in town. Not a huge shop or selection though so not worth traveling too far for, but if you're in Manchester it's worth checking out. I've picked up sms games at the cash generator on oldham street before as well, in case you've missed that.

Whether I have the time is another issue... I'd be happy to playtest. I'm sure there's some homebrew guys who could help out on the graphical/musical side. To be honest, I think the 3 games you have are just right. Alex Kidd is quintessential SMS and the money-collecting adds an extra dimension of strategy. Hang On is such a smooth game and handles so well, I'd definitely rate it over any other racing game on the system. Columns isn't the most exciting but it can be strategic and I'd rate it over Baku Baku and Dr Robotnik's.

Is that the one in the centre that is now called Joypad? if so I know about that one as I have them on facebook and my sister in law lives pretty much round the corner. The cash generator and cash converter websites are regular haunts for me, I dont go into the centre often but oldham street is intriguing

I could hack the Hang On scoring to only give the points for overtaking, which would probably make it more meaningful. The original Nintendo cart was similarly unbalanced, in that the highest scores came from speedrunning the first two games and then getting a high score in Tetris.
We should probably move to a new thread...
