A new high score competition to run alongside episode 3 of The SMS Quest . This score is beatable for definite but it won't be easy as I killed pretty much everything in the game and picked up nearly every collectable, enjoy trying to beat it .

Saw it this morning, awesome work! Seems like it was less of a pain in the ass for you then BTTF2 Probably should post this in the other thread, but might as well post it here. So no continues and only 3 extra lives with no other 1ups available to pick up? Seems a bit harsh, but I guess they planned on giving extra lives every 100,000 which for some reason didn't make it to the final game.

I got 147500 in a first attempt. Didn't get very far but I did kill all and get everything that I could.

A little hacking finds:
- You can't ever get any extra lives. The game doesn't have any graphics for numbers higher than 3 (it's not the same font as for the high-score) - If you play in Meka, open up the memory editor. Your score is shown in readable form at location C032, so you can see what you get for killing enemies - it looks like 25 points each no matter what enemy, but I didn't get very far in. - If you're going for a serious high score, it may be worth using up your extra lives to re-play levels with a lot of 1000 point bonuses.

Exactly, that's the reason why I got a reasonably high score while not getting far. It was the same argument about Digger Chan. Use up all your lives on the last level if you know the sequence by heart and you'd close to max out.

It remains to be seen on which level you can get the highest score and die at the end, and whether you're happy to then play through the rest of the game with 0 lives. I have some maps hanging around of the first 5 levels but later ones look like they'll be more fruitful. Edit: 3 tomatoes on level 2-1 is the most out of those five.

Didn't take long for someone to work out the best way to beat my score will be to farm points . I knew that was the best way to score big but didn't farm points in my run to give people a bit of lee-way . From memory (could be wrong!) but I think 5-1 is the best level for farming, I think there was 4 funny bone (10,000) point pick ups, maybe 5, and a stack of enemies. So that's a potential of around maybe 150,000 extra possible points. Means getting past Nessie without losing a life though, not an easy task at all ;D

I used to play this game quite a bit as a kid so I have a soft spot for it. I never completed it back then but managed to get to the last boss. Using your tips Stew I'm sure I could get through it now. I went to attempt to beat your score yesterday but found I didn't actually have a copy of the game. I could have sworn I had it I don't really want to play it through emulation so if anyone has a spare copy of the game I can take off your hands please let me know.

After watching your video I decided to buy the game. Found a decent priced copy on ebay and snatched it up. Just waiting for it to be delivered now. We'll have to see if the lack of music annoys me enough to not finish it. Hopefully not!
