Sound test:
(I did this a while ago to grab some music, I think all actions are carried out on a second pad)
Hold 1 and 2 as the title screen (rifle) appears, then press any button.

The cheat you mentioned Transatlantic isn't just a sound test. It's a cheat mode. You should notice that you can also select your starting level.
During the game, using controller 2, press Up to increase your lives and Button 1 to decrease them. Pressing Down completes the level.
