Yesterday, I was cleaning my consoles, and I found something that I didn't know.... Under the master system I is a "hole" (I don't know the English word for this). Here is a photo: i8.tinypic.com/63bjr4k.jpgWhat is this for???

Its the expansion connector, most consoles have at least one of some kind, to future-proof them for any possible upgrades or accessories. It gives access to the same data lines as the cartridge port, its the same connector as the Japanese Master System has - Bock made an adaptor that plugs in to it to allow western sms games to play on the Japanese console.
The Disk Drive add-on that sega was planning on making would have no doubt plugged in to that connector.
Oh and theres a plastic blanking plate that covers the connector as shown in your photo, that snaps off with minimum effort to make the connector useable.

So, in the Pal master system is useless.

Sega never made anything for it, it could be used as a second cartridge port - but thats pointless.
Its a shame Sega never made use of it, a CD drive would have been so cool. Not that one would have benefited the console much, after all the megacd didn't even achieve very much, still would have been interesting though.

My memory has faded a bit in the last 20 years , but IIRC the Canadian system manual mentioned stuff like a keyboard and disk drive add-on (it might have said "coming soon"). I think I looked around for that stuff for a few months

I have an SMS complete system that my parents bought in London, Ontario. I'll check the manual to see if it mentions that stuff. I think the system we bought (like most of the ones sold here), was the same as the ones sold in the U.S. But I'll check and report back shortly.

Yeah, I have a U.S. Master System, not a Canadian issued one, so there is no mention in the manual of any "coming soon" keyboards ofdisk drives.

SEGA were planning a CD drive and a drawing pad that you drew on and the image come up on your tv screen bothh were planned to plug in to the expansion port.

I think your getting your wires crossed thre, a floppy disk drive was being considered, there was a mock up of one at a games show, which may or may not have actually worked. A CD drive would have been a bit pointless on sms really.

...and the drawing pad was made because I have one. It plugs in the cart slot not the exspansion port.

Hmmm, that would be a good question to ask Steve. I wonder if they intended on making it like the Mark III version or would use the port? rupert, you mean you have the Mark version right?

Got it from Onyx a wile back and i'm quite good at it... I noticed there was about 3 on ebay a few months back. Not seen one for a wile though. I wonder if the Euro/ US one from the Ariolasoft booklet still exsists somwhere???
