I wrote this really fast, so sorry that it's hard to understand.
Sadly, we don't use the SCART connector in the states. Why, I do not understand. So as a result we don't have RGB in the states. I guess S-video was considered good enough. Well, nowadays you can easily enjoy RGB in the states. Before, you where screwed, I'm sure you could enjoy RGB in some way or another, but I'm lost there.
Anyway, I'll show you how you can. Beforwarned, my images turned out rather crappy.
All you need to do is buy a RGB -> Component Transcoder. You can find these on the internet. I reccomend buying one from this guy: myworld.ebay.com/specialty-av/
However, the one you get, is NOT the one pictured. Why he used a stock photo is beyond me. But it is VERY cheap.
If you want to use it with any system that doesn’t have it’s own audio inputs, you’ll have to mod it for audio… and that was pretty damn easy. Be forewarned, if you use a Sega Genesis/MD 1, you will not get sound, unless you get it via the headphone jack. They do make SCART leads with a stereo input for the MD1.
Here’s a pic of the SCART Pinout from the solder side of a connector:
You want pins 2, 4 and 6 for audio.
The ground wire is right there. So I don’t get any questions later, when you cut up an audio cable, twist the ground wire from the left and the right (it usually is copper) together and there is your ground. You can't miss it.
(Mine looks different, but the solder points are the same no matter what transcoder you use – these devices all are pretty much the same no matter if you buy the one from the guy on ebay for $50 odd dollars, or one from Maplin for much, much more.)
Here’s a pic of a modded Transcoder:
The gray stuff is silicone - I had my dad help me, and it was his idea. He is a electrican by trade, so he knows a thing or two. I don't really care if it looks pretty, just as long as it works perfectly. It sounds GREAT!
The only thing I have seen differing on these devices is voltage, so you’ll need to go to Radio Shack and buy a universal AC adaptor, be sure to take the device with you so they can match the voltage and tip. Or find a universal AC adaptor and match the voltage and tip. I managed to get an AC adaptor that works perfectly at a store called “Big Lots” which are all over the USA, the AC adaptor is made by a company called Triquest, and it was purchased for a pittance. It works perfectly with the one from the guy in Florida for $50 odd dollars.
As for SCART cables, you are on your own, so check ebay. NEVER buy the Mega Drive 2 SCART cable from NCSX.com because it’s a piece of faeces.
