We use this system also at NESWorld, just like DP. It's more personal that way.

If everyone put all of the ir stuff in 1 post on the trade feedback topic that would be ok to use but its still quite messy. I would also like to see a wants and for trade section from each member so we could all search for stuff.

It would be awesome. Sadly we are lacking in resources to do this. I did hope to do this at the start until I realised the limitations of the format we use on the site.
Maybe in the future this will be possible IF we get the hardware database in a good state, a much needed cleaning up of the games database.
I had hoped people would be a bit more enthusiastic about getting involved with these, seems most people are keen to but seldom keen on doing the work!

Well how would it need to be done?

As far as getting the members collection customised. Every member would need an account on the site, and then each member would need to have a table listing their collections. We could do them all on one table and use a query to sort them, but that would be horribly slow given the kind of database were using. Once every member has input their collection there would need to be another table for wants, and another for want to trades. Again, this would place a huge demand on the database. Essentially we need the database re-worked to a modern format like has been done on sega16bit.com - unfortunately if we do this, it leaves me out of the loop as I don't know the language, and the site would have to go into the hands of someone knowledgeable and reliable. Or else it may never be updated or changed. So, by the sounds of it my lack of knowledge of modern database design is holding us back. But until someone comes along and proves they could run this site better, I'm afraid you’re stuck with me Due to this I want to get what I know we CAN do with the site finished. The games database, the hardware database, the reviews, asks professor playor needs constant attention, related files, entering and verifying cheats, scanning and adding manuals, ads etc for every game. Due to this, I'm looking for people who have time to work on all these things entering information, uploading pictures, and files, organising the database and creating the resource! Only a fraction of HTML knowledge is required as most of it is done through the website admin interface. I want to get more people involved in updating, building and adding new features to the website. A couple of people have said they will help out in the past, only never to be seen again! Just now, the only a few people are actually updating the site. So once again, if anyone wants the facility to be able to edit the site, and contribute something back to this community, PM me and we’ll talk! Guest members need not apply!

I'm tired. I guess the other and probably the smarter way to do customised collections is the have a seperate TABLE for each game, with the list of owners. But, I'm tired as I say, and who am I to say, did I mention I barely passed relational databse design at uni?

Talk to Aypok. He gets off on web programming when he isn't playing games and wanting things to have grey backgrounds

Why not have a table for users, one for hardware/games (IE; stuff people can add to their lists), then a join table (a many-to-many table with links to the other two tables)? Or does MS Access not support references? Something like this:
user: ID - Username 01 - Aypok 02 - Rupert 03 - Sinistral ... - ...
hardware: ID - Name 01 - Alex Kidd In Miracle World 02 - Smurfs 2 03 - Light Phaser ... - ...
user_hardware: (join table) user_id - hardware_id 01 - 01 01 - 03 02 - 01 03 - 01 03 - 02 03 - 03
Etc.
For what it's worth: PHP (language used on Sega16bit) is very easy to use. But I can understand if you'd rather not learn a new language. :)

Well that rules me out of helping too, I didn't mean I think somone else should run the site it was just an idea.

I don't know if you'd have to learn a new language to accomplish what Aypok described; you would just have to learn the bits needed to do that kind of set up - adding users and games and such

I know It's possible to do it the way you describe aypok, but this is going to be really slow on a ms access database, there would be a hell of a lot of data in the user hardware table/user game table. each time you run that query its going to look up firstly the user hardware table/games table then look up the hardwareid/gamesid . We really are pushing the puny "jet engine" as it is just now. It's not I don't want to learn a new language. It's that I don't have the time to do it! And I'm now past the point where I'm willing to re-write the entire back-end of the website again

How about an ASP interface for PostGres? Or, failing that, MySQL.

Again, it's a learner. I'm a network/server engineer guy, not a programming type: D Ian? Hows your knowledge of these?
