ROMS

The question is above. Would this add anything to the site? Although we are always keen to promote the playing of original SMS games over ROMS any day this could still be useful for some members.
Currently I have set up a little SMSPOWER! Mirror on my home machine (http://sega8bit.servebeer.com) but adding the games to the database would be far more convenient. Also it would prevent mass leeching of ROMS, as the user would need to click each page individually to access the ROM files. We have unlimited webspace and bandwidth, so this is not a problem. My only worry is the legal side of it. Just how illegal would this be? Although it doesn't seem as bad as sharing "warez" it still infringes copyrights.

Just to clarify here, the idea is to mirror SMSPOWER! releases - not release our own. We are not competing with them. It just seems the availability of ROMS from reliable servers is a little limited nowadays

Although chances are nobody will care, is it worth the risk of any legal problems, especially when its not hard to find them elsewhere. Although there are some rom files that are not easy to find on other sites, like the japanese version of Enduro racer, i couldnt find that anywhere. Since most of us play the real games we dont really need them, but having all the roms in one place would attract more visitors, its a tough choice alright

I know what you mean about attracting visitors, but we have to ask if they are the kind of visitors we want to attract?
I think you are right, the chances of legal problems are slim, but look at what happened to pimpmysnack.com - that was so trivial.
There's a few people asked me why we never done this - I didn't at the time see the point as I don't really play ROMs if I can help it. But a lot of people do apparently.
With SMSPOWER only letting members download from their site the availability of these ROMS worries me. Thinking back though - the reason I got back into collecting Master System games was because I downloaded Shinobi from SMSPOWER. Maybe this could get more people interested in the same way?

I'd have to say no - it's not worth the hassle for yourself. Unlikely that any trouble would come of it - but it is possible. Obviously up to you though!

Thats how i got back into master system, well i never entirely went away as i never sold my original stuff. But when i discovered sms power years back when it had only just started, downloading all those mysterious games id never heard of when they had just been dumped was great. Man that seems like so long ago now, downloading them on a 28k modem on my amiga. Back then there wasnt a lot known about stuff like tectoy games, so rom releases were a real education, but its a lot more well known now and we can own the real thing instead.

Nope, too much leagal hassle could happen + I prefer the site without roms, we all know here we can get them, if anything we should encourage people to buy SMS games (obviously not the ones Im bidding on though!) also the playgen/chaotic thing of realesing unreleased games should be promote rather than pirating (Hock aside).

I would say yes. ROM's are a way to introduce the masses to the sega master system and when they see this site they wil definatelly know that this site is all about collecting. Heck, it might even get them to buying an SMS for their own.
It would also make the site even more complete.

I think it could have potential benefit to mirror them. I mean, one of the things I always find interesting is when people just don't know what the SMS can do, especially in the states, and just assume it sucks because it didn't do well. When they see some of the games they are pretty impressed, so it might increase are members but does that really matter is the bigger question. I'm all about keeping the history of it alive for future usage and new members, but that's really the only reason I'd think I'd want to do it.

You could have just a small selection of games for people who don't know to play. It's a secret to everyone, but on MEKA homepage, if you click on the skeleton pictures, it download a package of 5 SMS games I selected: Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Kung Fu Kid, Phantasy Star, Psycho Fox and Wonder Boy III

If people ask for ROMs we can always help them find them, I think you should stay with the current review slant for the site, as there arent many of them but theres loads places to get ROMs.

I agree with keeping ROMS off the site, there's many places to find ROMS, but the reviews are what make the site unique

More mirrors are always a good thing, but I'd probably suggest doing it on the quiet rather than having links all over the main site.
