Ok the Ebay part of the forum is full of really old links etc that I personaly feel could be deleted, how about if there was just an aprox price guide for games (ie Sonic 50p - £2, Smurfs 2 £150 - £400) at the top to help everyone and less posts, ie when the auction ends the thread goes.

The problem with price guides is that prices tend to vary significantly depending on a bunch of factors like time of year, number of collectors currently trying to finish their collection, how well auctions are listed etc... There's a bunch of games I bought a couple of years back for what I though were good prices, but I've seen them sell recently for a fraction of that price. At the same time, others have gone steeply up. Just look at how one copy of Champ Hockey recently sold for £70, then another 7 or 8 appeared and sold for anything between £15 & £50.
There's also the fact that a price guide may negatively impact things in the way that some people fear a rarity guide does - people will start using the "list price" as a starting point and moving up from there. I doubt anyone involved with this site would want to see people listing games on eBay and saying "Valued at £30 by sega8bit.com!" as part of the description.
Besides, for the vast majority of titles, it's possibly to get a rough idea of value by looking at completed eBay auctions.

Price guide in my opinion is a bad thing. These games are all worth what somebody is willing to pay for them on the day.
Apart from that, we want to encourage more posts! Not less!

A price guide would lead to everyone on ebay starting thier auctions for sms games at those prices. If your worried about paying too much for something just ask someone on here first, several of us have near complete collections now so we know what everything is worth. One of the best aspects of master system collecting is thats its cheap to do, 90% of the games can be bought for a couple of quid each if your patient.

I agree, making this stuff public eventually ruined the NES collecting scene, just look at eBay for evidence of that. If you have a question, best to ask some of us privately.

Ok, I just thought it might help new collectors, but what you guys have said makes a great deal of sense, I was drafting one for my book, but I think I will leave it now, I just want people to enjoy collecting, not get ripped off by retroboy etc.

Hhaaha, yeah, plus prices fluctuate so much that it's hard to pin anything down for certain.
