Well it was a tough call for me this week, so many quality games to choose from. Then i thought about the point of gotw. When it all started the idea was to pick a quality but rarely talked about game. The idea was that we'd pull the game from our collection and give it a proper play. There no point in picking the top games, as we all know how good they are, your sonics, phantasy stars, wonderboy 3s etc. I thought about games i love which don't get the attention they deserve. Then it struck me.
This week i've managed to combine all the above with the ability to pick one of my fav ever computer games..........
........The New Zealand Story.
This is a great little arcade platformer. You are tiki the kiwi (who actually looks more like the cadburys cream egg bird than a Kiwi) and you need to rescue all the little kiwi birds and your girlfriend (Phee Phee - the guy who thought up the names for this game is an absolute genius) from the evil walrus (think his name is wally) who has come to new zealand and kidnapped them all. The graphics are absolute quality, nice bright vibrant colours which really make the most of the Master System's ability. The music is addictive and you'll be humming that song a long time after your last Tiki gets killed.
Some of the touches are genius, like when tiki goes underwater he puts on a scuba outfit and spits water at baddies, or when he hangs from a balloon his feet flop about. As for weapons, our little feather hero can pick up fireballs, bombs and laser guns. As for transport, my favourite method is getting on the flying goose's back and cruising around on that. New Zealand story is a very hard game though, and you may need to use the many warp zones to progress very far in the game.
The gameplay is fast and furious with not too much slowdown when the screen gets packed. controls are nice and responsive. The instruction book recommends a really bizarre way of holding the control pad to play this game, can't get my head around it myself but hey, whatever floats your boat.
Overall, this is a great version of the original, and a game which in my opinion is extremely under rated, this is easily one of the best games on the SMS.
Hope you all enjoy playing NZS this week ;D

Nice!! I reckon the animation of the sprites on this game is one of the best examples on the system. Will give this a proper thrashing because, like ian, I do find this one a real bother. Still a top game though, be sure and get all the end of stage warps otherwise it's even harder.

This game is great, I need to get an old version Genesis though so I can play this in my converter. So everyone knows in the states or Canada, this game won't play very well in any SMS. From what I saw though, it's the perfect game to use for NES/SMS comparison.

This game was sooooo hard when I was 10... now I can at least get to the 3rd stage! Loved it because it was New Zealand... and without an Aussie game this was the next best thing! (Until Olympic Gold and Duncan Armstrong holding the 100m swimming record!)
Music is cool, love the balloon teddy-bears, and yeah the snorkel is so cute!! Recently swapped my spare copy of this game, so now they can enjoy GOTW too!
Great choice despite the difficulty, but then again a harder platform game is a nice change!

I unfortunately haven't gotten a chance to play it because my Genesis is at my parent's house. It is killer, I'm surprised more people haven't been talking about it this week. Where is everyone?

Haven't had much chance to play it this week, but it's a top-class game. I spent weeks playing the Amiga version back in the day, and the SMS conversion runs it very close quality-wise. If only they had got the same people to port Rainbow Islands!
