Thanks for that thrillingly zealous introduction Stan! Here is a game I have played a lot recently. I played it in the arcade, and love it on the Sega. Its shooting. Its flying. Its bombing enormous round bosses. Its BOMBER RAID!!
Played this back in the day as "1942" (or later 1943) in the arcade at 40c a pop. As I recall, these are the Nintendo titles for the game...
Anyway, Bomber Raid is the Sega adaptation and I love it! The midday-movie-esque music at the start, the blue prints of the mission.. Its all exciting as you take off along the runway. Shoot the crazy UFOs for P(ower ups) and S(peed). The power-ups are frequently available and if you dont lose any men, and collect every P you see, you get the max power midway in level 2 (I reckon it looks a bit like a Batman symbol). The speed is great for manouverability too. I stop getting them after about 4 though... it becomes too touchy for me. Oh, dont miss out on the mini bi-planes (1) (2) (3) (4). Shoot the number to change it. Hold down button 1 and press button 2 to change the bi-plane positions relative to you!! These guys are really handy! I find number (2) at configuration 2 to be the best.
This game ideally is played with the Control Stick. Regular controller is fine, but I find finger cramps are more likely. The arcade feel of the stick is well suited. Sometimes, where there is a lot on the screen you get the flickers going, but nothing to impede play or vision. The music, can be seen as repetitive, but I love the vibe and feel it gives to the game. Watch your colour/contrast settings on the "over land" levels.. the brown and red can blend and some of the enemies are hard to see.
The round bosses and challenging, but not too hard. Some you need to suss your strategy a few times to get them. save your bombs and use them wisely.
I love this game and its definately in my top 5. Looking forward to all commments. Oh, I cant get past level 4!!!

1942 is like the worst game ever. Is this really based on it? Been a bit since I played/beat it, but I'll check it out again. It was a pretty solid title, simple but solid.

I would say it's more a ripoff of 1943 than 1942. This certainly isn't the best shooter on the SMS. It lacks personality. But it's pretty good. The really bad thing is that you have to use an SMS controller (no G/MD controllers) and it can be a pain.

Bomber Raid has brought me years of enjoyment, one of the best SMS games ever. From the day my brother got it for his birthday, to the day my friend stole it, and to the day (approx a year ago) I found a mint condition copy at a flee market, this game has been THE GAME for me. Never has there been another game that has kept me playing for hours and hours on end............THANKS FOR CHOOSING BOMBER RAID, it deserves respect........PLAY THE GAME!!!! ;D

I cant believe i only just noticed this thread.
BOMBER RAID is like the best game on all formats ever!!!!! (Well maybe not but it sure rocks)
This is my all time favorite SMS game, the speed and firepower are awsome and it is a real challenge. I once managed to complete it 4 times in a row as it loops back to the start after the final boss. I think it took me about 4 hrs solid or something.
This game deserves a re release in my eyes!!
I could never get sick of this game, i have about 10 copies of this game as i have worn them all out playing for hours on end!!!!
WHAT A GAME!!!!!!!! (Sorry i got so excited)

I do enjoy this game. Has some minor quirks, but it's enjoyable.

The really bad thing is that you have to use an SMS controller (no G/MD controllers) and it can be a pain. G/MD controllers work OK if you can switch your system into JP mode (I'm using a double-switched Mega Drive/SMS Convertor/Arcade Power Stick set up ))
