Anagrama is at the wheel, drunk as ______ and ready to kill! Bad lyrics from a bad band. Can ana save us? Can he provide us with another excellent title to save us from the cheese I have thrown in the forum? Tomorrow will tell!

Cheers Stan! My selection for this week is a conversion of a 1986 coin-op which I first experienced around 1989 when it was included on an Amiga coverdisk. Forgive superficial similarities to last week's game (both top-down games featuring shooty vehicles), since the 'feel' of it is quite different... Is it a bike? ... Is it a car? ... Is it a plane? ... 'Yes' to all of the above means it can of course only be one game, ladies & gentlemen, I present... ACTION FIGHTER! Starting off on a souped-up version of the Hang On bike, you scroll up the screen blasting away at anyone crossing your path (bar the power-up-dispensing Sega van), and collecting letters to transform into the much more durable car. A couple more letters and you strap on jet engines and take to the skies, at which point it becomes a more traditional vertical shooter. While I'm not going to pretend it's one of the finest games to grace the Master System, it is a fun diversion and, despite having infinite lives while there's time on the clock, presents a very steep challenge. There's 5 stages, but I've only seen the first 4 in the past and haven't been able to get that far in the last couple of days. It can be frustrating and a little repetitive at times, but has enough about it to give it a unique feel and you don't hear it mentioned that often, which is surprising given it's ubiquitous nature. Thoughts? Love it? Loathe it? And just why are you shooting ambulances anyway?

I loved this game at the arcade.... I can't pass level on on the Sega though! I like the change of vehicle and music suits well. It's just a bit hard for me in the bike/car mode... The flying part I am ace at though... its getting the upgrades on the groud that I suck at. Not a bad time filler game though. Not good for long periods (ala 4hrs of WonderBoy)
Spicy pick though! Should provide some good comments.

I pick a decent game like Line of Fire and people could care less about it, while clunkers like this and Aztec Adventure "provide some good comments." Guess it's a nostalgia thing...

Or so you thought. I really don't like this game. It presents decent but has several faults that just get on my nerves. The driving part is okay, but did anyone else notice that the buildings are WAY out of perspective? Sometimes I noticed the curves come on way too fast and you can't seem to steer around them correctly, careening right into the wall. However, the driving part is a lot of fun. That is, of course, until you take to the skies. When my friend and I first played this we were like faeces, rubber duck yeah, blinking flying car. Or, to quote the hilarious review about this game we didn't publish, "you get to own ambulances and heap o faeces cars." Not in the skies. You see the same barrage of helicopters and nonsensical flying objects over and over again. It never changes. At least on the ground you're given some sense of different, but in the sky it seems like the same level over and over into infinite. Really got on my nerves. If they had changed it so the enemies attacked with different attack patterns instead of the SAME patterns every time, I might not have minded. The bosses due give it some variety, but they're just so pathetic they hardly save the annoyance felt in the flying parts. Spy Hunter it ain't.

Oh yeah, and thanks for like one weapon upgrade. Come on guys, give me some blinking lazers or something, not just lame missles. Plus, lose them and you have to shoot things like a kabillion times. Anyone else notice that the flying car's wings are like off center? What's the deal with that?

This game makes Line Of Fire look like a masterpiece! While the timer idea is unique, the game is just too difficult with the default weapon regardless of the "unlimited lives", and it's too easy to lose the power-up. I'm all for challenging games but this one goes into ludicrous mode. The early One-Mega graphics and sound don't really hold my interest either. The vehicle upgrade is cool though. Still, shooters are supposed to be difficult, so I will spend the rest of week 3 trying to get further. After about 20 tries I finally completed level 1 yesterday

It would take me more than 20-30 times, but hey it is all in fun!

OK, so maybe nostalgia is playing a large role, but despite it's shortcomings and frequent cheap deaths, I do find this strangely addictive and keep being drawn back like a gluton for punishment. Guess that's just me Hell, at least it'll make you all appreciate next week's choice that bit more

Well this came with our SMS when we bought it, so I have fond memories of this game. I think it is a great game, the difficulty is good except for the last two bosses which are nearly impossible without cheating. Also I found the opening theme pretty good.
Stan summed up the problems with it well, but I view them as fairly minor problems when the game is as fun as I find it.
One last thing, does anyone know what the hell that cat thing is for, or does?

I saw a Space Shuttle fly up the screen today (while I was still on the road). Don't know what caused it to appear.

I quite liked this game when i played it i mean a friend of mine had lots of games on his sms compared to myself at the time. But it used to bug me that all the arcade conversions were never as good as they were on the arcade bar Shinobi / Rtype of course. Anyways i liked this game played for ages
