Twelve weks in, and it's the turn of Sinistral this time. I'm sure we can rely on the webmaster here to maintain the current rich vein of GotW choices, right?

Phew I nearly forgot about this. Today has been a busy day being my birthday. I think this calls for me to choose a game that I received for my birthday many year ago, I can't be sure but I think it was 1989. My choice for the GOTW is ................................. GLOBAL DEFENCE!!!! The game in our database : www.smstributes.co.uk/getinfo.asp?gameid=162The game is split into two types of level"offensive half" is the side scrolling shooting part and it also has "laser blast" style levels called "defensive half". I believe the game was originally an arcade game called SDI (which I guess it changed because it sounded like some kind of unpleasant disease) I think this game is very difficult, but also quite under-rated. It does seem to become a whole lot easier with a few speed-ups but I myself could never get further than the "asteroid belt" level. I never really hear people talking about this game, so this is my main reason for choosing it. Please play and enjoy!

Global Defense Two Pads: The game is easier if you use two Control Pads. To play with two Control Pads, press and hold right on Control Pad 2, and press Button 2 twice. Playing with two Control Pads is very difficult at first, but once you get used to it, it will boost your scores greatly.

... GLOBAL DEFENCE!!!! ...this game is very difficult, but also quite under-rated. Man, I love that game! My buddy had it when we were younger, and played it like a two-player game in the way that RaccoonLad stated. We still never beat it, though. I do know we got quite far. If I remember correctly, my friend did all the dodging. I used the controller that shot everything. Man, that game was a blast! I would say this is one of my top ten, actually. Honestly, I haven't played but about... oh... 40 - 50 Master System games, but this is one of the more fun ones that I used to jam on. Good selection! It's SO under-rated, and IS a nice choice Sinistral!

As most members seem to agree on... this game is very challenging. I too was spanked by this game and therefore haven't played it or given it much of a go really. I guess now that it's a GotW I should give it a burl..... I just found the controls too difficult

I got this game for christmas one year and it was damn hard, and I didn't like it when I first got it. But after I sold it, and then obtained it again years later I sat down and played it a heap and really liked it. It is hard, and from memory it just keeps going, one time I sat down and I was planning on finishing it but that games just keeps going and going. Has anyone finsihed it and can they tell which level is the last?
Anyway good choice, i'll have to whip it out and give it another crack.

Dived in with the two-pad method tonight, and it seems my co-ordination is sorely lacking Must practice!

Had a go last night. Even though I've had it for a while I've only played it a handful of times. It is quite a fun blast. Like a weird take on Missle Defense. The only problems I have with it are the steep learning curve. The game starts off very hard until you get some power ups. One time I played I actually lost all my lives in the first few levels before powering up the satellite and then getting reasonably far into the game. Also the soundtrack is fine except for the little jingle that is played before a level when it says Offensive Half and Defensive Half which I think sounds dreadful. Graphically the game is sound. Clear well drawn sprites with the different planets giving a variety of backgrounds. Very little sprite flicker and slow down when the action hots up. Overall a great little shoot em up with a difference if you can just get past the first few levels.

Been playing this all week now, and have found things much easier since fashioning my own Global Defense pad - screw your custom shells and blue LEDs, this is where real d.i.y. modding is at: ;D Seriously, it works pretty well, providing some stabilty by strapping them together rather than flail around with a pad in each hand, and I've been doing much better as a result - got to the 4th Defensive round just now before getting KO'd. Top-rate choice, Andy - it's really good fun (and challenging) game and I had paid it scant attention in the past.
