Sunday afternoon rolls around again, bringing with it the next Game of the Week... Following a top choice last week from Mr. Stepanic to kick off V2 in fine form, this time we have CRV making his GotW debut. I'm expecting good things here...

It's more solid licensed platforming fun with...
BATMAN RETURNS
I tried this game many times on my Dreamcast emulator, but I could never get past the first stage. I always wanted to like it, though. But this week, it finally clicked with me. And because of that, I picked it as my GOTW.
I also tried the Game Gear version this week. It's the same, but very different. After much soul-searching, I've given the nod to the SMS version and that's what I will mostly talk about here.
Story/Gameplay
You are Batman and you have to stop Catwoman and Penguin from taking over Gotham City.
You are armed only with a grappling hook (to swing from ledges and whatnot) and your baterang (to kill enemies), which you can power up along the way. The GG version has a special attack, which is not present here, where the Batmobile comes and destroys everything on-screen. Not that you'll really need it. It also takes one hit to get killed (the GG version has a life meter).
There are five stages, with the first four being divided into two routes. Route 1 tends to be easier, while Route 2 requires some more skill, especially with swinging.
Graphics
Very detailed with some nice animations. Check out Batman's cape...
Music/Sound
This game has a fantastic soundtrack from Motohiro Kawashima, who also worked with Yuzo Koshiro on Streets of Rage II and III on the Gen/MD. It fits the game well. It's perhaps some of the best music on the SMS or GG. As for the sound effects, they're not bad. Among them, you have explosions and the clanking of your baterang.
Control
The thing that's probably most frustrating is swinging around.
Difficulty
It can be challenging, especially if you take Route 2.
Overall
Amazingly, I've grown to, dare I say, love this game. But remember: To get the most out of it, you'll need to take your time, get to know the enemies, and get familiar with the controls. Otherwise, it can be a bit frustrating.

A decent little old-fashioned arcade-style game. Route 1 is pish, but 2's an arse - not being able to shoot while swinging is a bit crap, among other annoying things. I'll give it more time over the week. The music on the second Round is well funk'd

This game is great, a very nice pick. This gives me a reason to give it a run through now. I remember playing one or two stages before and really digging it. Compared to the Mega Drive version, it's just, incredible.

I haven't given this one much play, but what I did experience was pretty good. A few gameplay quirks, but pretty decent.
I wish that snow effect in the first level from the GameGear version was on the SMS, THAT was cool!

Is there a reason it wasn't done on the SMS? Laziness? The display?

I love this game, love it to bits. I have the original copy and used to play it hours on end. Route 2 can be pretty though but not impossible. The ending is a bit naff, but you do get a real feeling of achievment when you do finish the game.

I really like this game. I think the whole selecting routes concept is a good idea, though I haven't beaten it yet so I can't say how that effects the ending or anything. The graphics are really good, the music/sound is excellent, the controls are well layed out. It's a great game. The only problem I really have with it is that Batman only has one hit. Should have had a life bar. But, I guess this is counteracted with the fact that you get like 3 extra lives to find on every level.
