This might sound crazy but I swear it worked. My friend had an early Genesis with a SMS converter, when we would put Wonderboy in Monsterland into the cconverter and have a certain controler pluged in the game would start and it would not be in English, I'm guessing it was Japenese, on top of that all the bad guys took twice as many hits to kill than normal. I don't remeber if you had to use a master system controler or a Genesis controler. I know this sounds crazy but I swear it worked. Let me know if you have all the equipment needed and try this.

Can't remember exactly what, but the Master System has some kind of region check through the controller port.

Just had a look and the JP version of the game "Super Wonder Boy in Monster World" is a harder game, with enemies needing more hits to kill.

And monster land is on of the few games that does contain both versions of the game and changes depending on the region of the console - different title screen and whatnot.
