Hard Mode:
At the title screen hold "Down" on the d-pad and press button 1.
Invincibility:
As soon as the game starts pause the game and enter the button combination "1,1,1,2,1,1,1,2". Now unpause the game and die without pressing button 1 or 2. When you start a new game your health will still decrease when hit but will replenish when it gets to zero.
