Hey all,
Just need some advice as I have got a rather nasty virus on my PC. The browser has been set to trusted sites with one that I don't recognise. I can't sign in to ebay or paypal without it being allowed to see my information. Also Windows Explorer keeps crashing whenever I try to open it. None of my anti-virus programs seem to find anything and I'm running out of options.
I have considered a system restore only I've never done one before. If I did one would it delete all of my work in the My Documents folder as well as my programs. I don't want to lose the programs as I don't have the disks for things like Dreamweaver or Flash anymore.
Any help would be great.
All the best.....RetroReserve

sorry retro id love to help ,but hay you guessed it i cant lol
look in the local paper for any pc wizzards that could help
but i recently got stuck in the same situation as you where i had to start a new xp install and i never wanted to lose my documents or programs
but all i can think of is that if your virus software is upto date and its not finding out then it may be some kinf of spyware or something !
when it happend to me i just put the hard drive on an old pc i had then transfered anything i wanted to save and then i reloaded xp onto my pc and then put the files i needed onto cd from the old pc and then back onto my newly loaded pc

Well, I got completely infested with all kinds, 'cause I spent a couple of months using the internet without any protection at all[/i] (no virus detection, firewall - nothing), just for the hell of it. In the end, the poor thing basically just seized up and slowed to a crawl.
I disconnected, and I managed to save almost all of my documents and some programs - on around 5 CDs - with Nero (took about a week 'cause it was running so slow). Then I used the XP Professional product recovery CD for the first time (on my stolen laptop, which I'm using as we speak ;D ), expecting everything to be wiped clean.
Surprisingly, I think I remember that I was given the option to keep all my documents, and it just created a second (administrator) user account for my new start. So I had all my music and paintings and shit still on my computer in another account within Documents and Settings, which I just transferred to my new user account.
They are all working just as they were, but Media Player's Media Library and settings was wiped clean as if newly installed, and itunes player was removed. Most of my old programs still existed in My Computer, but they didn't work 'cause it was like all the files were there, but they hadn't been installed to run, just transferred. In the end, there was little need for all the CDs I'd written, but I had to re-install most programs and delete most of the old program files.
I don't know whether it'd do the same for you, but yeah all my shit is still here without me needing to put them back in, so now I'm just keeping the written CDs as back-ups. A few programs still work no problem without re-installation, so I don't know what that's about - but Windows was def re-installed, and the whole unit was completely cleaned of krap.
I got the full Norton 2004 off ebay for £20 inc. p&p, and it's no bother as long as you configure or turn off the rather over-zealous Parental Controls and stuff. For £20 I got a year's updates of everything, no pop-ups, no ads if I don't wana see them, and all viruses just get proper creamed (plus there's always new updates for new viruses). Some people may say it's much too security-obsessed, but as long as you configure everything to your tastes, access to whatever is not a problem - having said that, I can't really be arsed with the nasty krap out there anyway, so I've never encountered a problem.
The system restore treated me very well, so if you're using the same I'd recommend it in your circumstances. To be honest, I don't even care about viruses unless they're obviously malicious, or tasteless - you might be over-reacting with this thing of yours. Just wipe all your temporary files, and virus check everything again. If Explorer still crashes, back up your favourites just in case, and then purge your system.
