It's called American Idiot. They just started playing it on the radio today. I love it. Green Day has been my favorite band since I was 8 (almost 10 years now). I am looking forward to the new album that comes out September 21st (US) and 20th (World).
The album American Idiot carries a strong political message against President Bush, and features a 9-minute rock opera entitled "Jesus of Suburbia". Green Day will also have a new song featured on Rock Against Bush Vol. 2. You can dissagree with their politics all you want but they make great music.

Yeah. Hhahahhaa. I never minded them too much, but they are total hacks. So much out there that people don't know about that's better than them. Dead Kennedys, Doom, etc.

Well, don't get me wrong, they have some good stuff, I just think they're too overly produced and what not now.

Well then we can agree to disagree. I won't even agree to that. I just can't abide whiny-ass middle-class California High 90210 bullshit punk poseurs. I hate all of it - the Offspring, Blink 182, Less than Jake, etc etc. Put any of 'em in London or Manchester or Toxteth circa 1976-80 and they'll see what punk was all about - they wouldn't last a minute. Dead Kennedys - I've only really got into 'Holiday in Cambodia' by them, I get bored of the rest.

Well it's obvious you don't even know anything about Green Day. They aren't whiney. You're from England. Don't stereotype California by what you see on TV. 90210 is glorifying rich kids in southern California. Green Day is not from southern California, they are from the bay area, as I am also. They grew up in Rodeo, California, which is a blue-collar, low income town. Billie Joe's father died when he was 10, and his last gift to him was a guitar that is know know as his trademark. Mike lived in foster homes his whole life. Tre' lived in the mountains in a shack, his father was a vietnam veteran. They toured US and the world while on an indie label, driving in a bookmobile. They donate to hospitals and chairity organizations in this area. They still live here. And if you run into them in public they aren't jerks. Read their full bio, then you can judge. I'll even give you the link. www.greenday.net/thegreendaystory.html

I didn't know much about their background and it seems you do, so I stand corrected. You do have to admit though, pretty much every single college-punk (emo?) band that has adopted Green Day's sound fit quite snugly into my derisory generalisations. To me, there's just so little substance to it - and purely superficial music has been done so much better before. It's music that's isn't saying anything or evoking anything, it's not exciting or innovative or hard-driven, and it's not even much fun. There's essentially no difference to me between Sum 41, Blink 182 etc and the stuff produced by 'reality TV' boybands & the like. Just replace high-pitched whiny pointlessness about 'love', for high-pitched whiny pointlessness about teenage cod-rebellion or fart jokes - and don't forget to add the same old guitar distortion and basic rhythm to every fuc king track (all 20-odd of them). The idea of punk being so stripped down and simplistic was so that the message was put across raw, pure and universal - the best of that music is so powerful because of the intensity behind it. I don't get it with the toned-down stuff. What the fu ck is 'emo' supposed to mean? Isn't ALL music 'emotional'? I wasn't stereotyping California - I said 'California High', the kind of High Schools and High School Kids that you do see only on TV. In every place, you'll find a bit of soul somewhere. As for Green Day being whiny, I'm sorry but force yourself to listen to 'Time of your life' one more time, and you'll see what I mean. Plus, the ho in 'Basket Case' clearly told Billie Joe to quit his whining.

I'm afraid I'm with transbot on this one - there's something very wrong about 40-year old men with green hair pulling 'goofball' faces and writing the kind of generic derivative radio-friendly crap that has the audacity to call itself 'punk'.

Yeah, aside from that teary eyed story there, I really could care less about their music, it's crap. Stupid four one four bullshiat that anyone could play. Lacks substance.

Green Day's music is not simple. Unless you can pick up a guitar or bass, or get behind a drum kit, don't judge the simplicity of their music. I can even give you a list of songs to listen to that have awesome guitar solos and drum fills. Listen to these and tell me that they aren't talented.
Guitar Solos:
Only of you The One I want The Judges Daughter Paper Lanterns 409 In Your Coffemaker Knowledge One for The Razorbacks J.A.R. The Grouch Espionage Castaway Outsider Maria I Fought The Law American Idiot
Drum Fills:
Burnout Welcome To Paradise In The End Panic Song Platypus (I Hate You) Haushinka American Idiot
Most diverse songs:
Tired of Waiting For You Last Ride In Espionage Misery
Yes, Green Day influenced todays pop punk/emo bands, but that's not they're fault. They have clearly stated that they never knew that their music was going to get as big as it was, that's what Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) was about.
Theire music was radio friendly in the begining, but listen to signifigant difference between Dookie and Insomniac. Listen to all of the different styles of music on Nimrod and Warning. American Idiot will be their most diverse to date, featuring a 9-minute rock opera entitled "Jesus of Suburbia". They write their music for themselves, not the masses. They get radio play becuase people like them, not becuase they're trendy, but because they are the original.
How do you think they got their influence? They didn't get it listening to crap! The Undertones, The Sex Pistols, The Jam, The Clash, Buzzcoks, The Who, The Ramones, Cheap Trick, The Kinks, and Black Sabbath were their main influences!

I've played bass and drums for several years, not to mention I've played piano for 10 and know a thing or two about how music is written. Trust me, it's simple. By the way, punk was a complete joke, Johnny Rotten from the Sex Pistols was an Art History major who created it to be a new type of art.

I think I heard that song on the radio at work today. I don't really like Green Day. I forgot it after we all found a plush alien doll and started throwing it at the ceiling fan.
