I know how to repair your controllers..
It just takes a little time.
I have repaired loads of SMS and Megadrive controllers this way.
When you press the button, there is rubber around it, and there is a magnetic pad in the bottom of the rubber, and one on the pad's PCB (Printed Circuit Board), so when you press the button down, the magnetic pads touch, and send a signal to the console.
If you open up the pad (be very careful), you can take a soft cloth, with some cleaning solution on it. for example Isopropyl Alcohol, or Liquid Soda Crystals, and rub around the pad, it's the same for the D-pad
Usually it's just dirt, and foreign objects inside the pad, preventing the magnetic plates from getting proper contact = no signal sent = the controller wont go UP
Hope this helps, let me know if you have any other queries!
