YO! A big shout out to all the SMS players and fans,
New forum member here, just thought I'd say "Hi" and introduce myself. I'm Greg aka 'the Games Mush' and based in South London.
I'm a big fan of the SMS. It was my first console I owned. It wasn't the first console I ever played, that was the Vectrex. But it was the SMS that was my first real video game experience.
I think it was in '88 when I was at school and my friend Nick told me he was selling his SMS. I think I recall he wanted £75, which I think back in the day was very reasonable. After some nagging, begging and pleading we ended up buying the SMS mkI package which consisted of the following:
Rocky – (1987-08)
Outrun – (1987-10)
Marksman Shooting / Trap Shooting / Safari Hunt – (1987)
Wonderboy in Monster Land – (1988)
Double Dragon – (1988)
And of course, the built-in: Alex Kid, Hang On and Snail Maze.
It also seemed like I owned Shinobi (1988) but if memory serves me correct(?) that belonged to a friend which I use to borrow for, what seemed, extended long periods of borrowing. Luckily, my friend at the time didn't mind and I would do a temp swap with my copy of Double Dragon. This is what I had to do, back in the day, to experience other SMS titles.
Over time I added Golden Axe, Sonic 1 and Running Battle (not by choice on RB, I had to use a voucher in Boots!). Unfortunately, I was forced to sell my SMS collection (like most of us) because of wanting to upgrade to the land of 16-bit and the mega drive (along with a Jap version of Midnight Resistance).
Over the years I have always had a soft spot for the SMS. I re-purchased a MkII around 2000 and have been buying the odd game over the years, with the most recent purchase being: Alien Syndrome.
I have a small collection which I have aimed to collect for the ones that I actually like to play/would play. I also like to add in some of the very early and SMS-only exclusives within reason. I made the conscious decision that a full collection was a bit OTT for myself but I understand why people like to go for the full sets and that's all good – the patience and dedication is impressive!
Fast forward to the current day, I recently stumbled across some of 8BitBoyUK's high score challenge and thought it would be great to get involved with the SMS community finally. This also coincides with a recent decision to start my YouTube channel soon which will feature some dedicated arcade cabs, Nintendo Switch (retro), Amiga and of course the SMS!
Looking forward to getting involved with the scene. I'll be joining in the high score challenges. I have a couple of duplicates in my collection (Double Dragon, Black Belt, The Ninja) which I'm happy to trade. Also, would be great to do any future meet-ups, e.g. Arcade Club, etc.
Cheers for now. Happy gaming, GG!
