It’s been a long time since I’ve been on this board! I’ve posted this elsewhere but then I remembered that this excellent forum exists, and thought it would be interesting to the SMS fan community. It’s definitely an exciting find to me. My uncle was clearing out a load of his stuff recently, and messaged me on Friday to say he’d found something he thought I’d want. He proceeded to send me a photo of a sealed copy of Sonic 2 Master System, with a sticker of £29.99 from WHSmith (A long-standing and still trading U.K. store). He had a Mega Drive, not a Master System, so he presumably stashed this away with the intent to return it but then forgot about it for... well, not sure when he bought it, but the sticker says it was £29.99? I’m not sure what price games were back then new vs a few months / years after release so this might help date it. In any event it’s at least 28 years old. WHSmith seem to have moved the sticker from the front over to the side, as there’s some residue outline of an older sticker, and for some reason they or the manufacturer also wrapped a line of sellotape horizontally and vertically around the wrapping, presumably to make it harder to break into. The glue has turned a brown / red in some places, seemingly where the factory would have heat sealed it shut. The game case itself is in perfect condition, and was stored at room temperature in a large chest of drawers for nearly three decades so I can’t see there being any issues with the cartridge internals. It’s a really cool find and I never thought one of my own family would have something like this stashed away. I run an SEGA-related Instagram page so here’s some photographs of the game: http://instagram.com/p/CjdPC2doOR5 It seems pretty rare to find sealed Master System games nowadays, and I can’t really find much online for them either. If it’s not worth that much though, it would be tempting to open it.

Well it's rare to find them sealed like that because (at least in the UK) most of them were sold unsealed at retail - they'd pop the game and manual in the case when you took it to the checkout. Even at Toys R Us or Argos, where you took a ticket for it and it'd come out of a warehouse, the games typically weren't sealed up.
Impressive though, I don't recall WH Smith ever selling Master System games - or video games at all until recently (and even then it's mostly system-specific eshop cards)! They did have an extensive VHS range and chart/popular CDs in the mid-late 90s, but I don't remember ever seeing a game section (the weird award definitely goes to Boots, unbelievably, who had a huge array of games in the early 90s). £29.99 would have been retail price at launch - typically new SMS games were £29.99 or £32.99 but I don't think there was any technical reason behind that extra £3.
It's unlikely anyone would have been charging full price for an old SMS game from 1994 onwards, so that Sonic 2 is probably either from launch or 1993.

it would be tempting to open it. Had it been in my hands it would've already been opened as I probably wouldn't be able to stop myself from doing so 🙈

What a wonderful find and a great little story behind it. I absolutely love hearing about still like this. Great that you shared with us. Not sure if you'll ever want to see but I know copies of Merc's regularly go on eBay sealed for over £50.

What a wonderful find and a great little story behind it. I absolutely love hearing about still like this. Great that you shared with us. Not sure if you'll ever want to see but I know copies of Merc's regularly go on eBay sealed for over £50. Thank you, I love stories like this myself so as soon as it happened I thought other SMS fans would be interested too. I had seen a copy of Mercs sealed, but it seems to be the only game I can find much info on regarding sealed versions. A YouTuber also was given a sealed copy, and others have also shown up on eBay. I’m not sure why Mercs seems to be the game that shows up frequently! It doesn’t seem to me like the price of SMS games goes up dramatically when they’re found sealed, which I assume is due to the games often never being sealed to begin with. It seems a bit like a niche collectors item at this point.

Bought 2 mercs and 2 wolfchild, opened 1 kept 1 sealed 😅 They're the Australian Ozisoft versions though! I’m not sure why Mercs seems to be the game that shows up frequently! I believe these are NOS warehouse finds, and probably majority of these copies originate from the same source . Why these Australian Ozisoft copies ended up in Italy beats me 🤷 dunno if anyone has figured that one out yet 😅
