So only 26 years after the game was made, a cheat has been discovered 
Cheat mode
When the 'Gremlin' logo appears press U, U, D, D, L, L, R, R.
This will let you select up to 9 continues in the options menu.
You can also select your level by pressing up/down when the first level title card appears.
The cheat mode may have some other effects I haven't come across yet, so let me know if you notice anything.
