After looking through some old official Brazilian Sega Club magazines recently, I noticed in the ‘coming soon’ section of issue 22 it advertises Power Rangers on the Sega Master System. I contacted Maicon Barbosa who worked on the recent Tectoy relaunch of the Mega Drive in Brazil and with his help he contacted Marcelo Caiado who was the software engineer for Tectoy in the 90s and along with Mauricio Guerta did all the hacks and Game Gear ports to the SMS. Turns out that not only did Power Rangers get cancelled in 1997, but at least 6 other games did as well! This was due to Tectoy running out of money and unable to pay for the copyrights and eventually filing for bankruptcy. The 7 cancelled games were: Power Rangers: The Movie Toe Jam & Earl Beavis & Butthead Urban Strike Home Alone (Never got a Brazilian release) Halley Wars (This was released as Space Battle on the Game Gear) Fantasy Zone 1 (Never got a Brazilian release) Unfortunately most of the prototypes for these games have been lost Left to right: Alexandre Pagano - Designer for Tectoy in the 90s, Marcelo Caiado - Software Engineer for Tectoy in the 90s and Maicon Barbosa at the 30th anniversary of the partnership between Sega and Tectoy last year, and the relaunch of the Mega Drive 1 in Brazil

Great post Wolfticket! You never know though, these prototypes may turn up one day as people are becoming much more aware of the importance / value of anything retro gaming related.

Hopefully they do! 👍 He also said there were other games that were cancelled, around 10 altogether. He will try to remember the others and let us know

Urban Strike did get a GG release, so this probably would have been a conversion of that rather than a native SMS port. Shame neither it nor Jungle Strike got an SMS port though, given how good a job was done on Desert Strike.

Very cool information. It would be great if protos or source codes for these games turned up one day. Do let us know if you find out any more! Urban Strike did get a GG release, so this probably would have been a conversion of that rather than a native SMS port. Shame neither it nor Jungle Strike got an SMS port though, given how good a job was done on Desert Strike. Indeed Desert Strike was very well done but I'm not sure how good TecToy efforts for Jungle or Urban would have been though!

Some interesting games there and not exactly shabby ones either, if a good job had been done they could have been great ports.
*Curses self for not having knowledge to do gg to ms ports*

I also got him to pre order me the new Master System plug and play that was released last week Very cool information. It would be great if protos or source codes for these games turned up one day. Do let us know if you find out any more! Any more info I can find I’ll post on here 👍

Just saw the post shared by Omar over on SMSPower for this thread and appreciate it was some time ago but did anyone ever find out anymore about the other cancelled games that never got a release over there? Would be really interested to do a little YT vid on this subject. Post from Omar yesterday. www.smspower.org/forums/20377-TecToyCancelled7SMSGamesIn1997#132906
