Okay everyone! Sorry you haven't seen me playing much. Been spending time with the kid most of the day, and she's just getting into playing. Still has limited attention for it because she's only learning how to move things with the controller, but this is one I think I'll be able to enjoy with her because of how it works. Further, I did a quick check and it seems we never considered this one for the Game Club, so here we go! I decided I wanted a Light Phaser game because I feel the SMS library for this peripheral was much stronger than that of the NES initially. Rescue Mission is clear proof of that. It's simple in how it works, and uses the LP in a way that is unique, yet not so unique that it's too unique for its own good (see Gumshoe for the NES to see what I mean). To my knowledge this is also a shooting game not based on anything that Sega released previously. Its only downside might be that it's too short at about 15 minutes to finish from what I remember, but hey, with a little girl who can take about 20 minutes tops of playing some old games, that's perfect for me. Try it out, I bet you really haven't before.

So far playing with emulator hasn't been a great disadvantage, but with a LP game it's another story. But I'll give a try to see the game, even if it's a very different experience with a mouse.

Excellent choice! I love that you went for something different! One of the games I always wanted as a kid. The cover art, the screen shots, the mysterious rename...all added to my desire to own it. Yet it was not meant to be, until 20+ years later when I finally bought it. Unlike many of my purchases at the time, this was one of the few that immediately went into the console to play. Although I didn't spend as much time as should have, I did enjoy it. One of the few games that I purchased in adulthood that I am sure I would not have regretted as a child. Imust make a better effort to play soon.

This was one of the first games I bought for my SMS when I was a kid - thank you £10 budget range!
I really love it, it's mad fun with catchy tunes. The short length makes for a great quick blast now and again.
On the downside, I hate losing the first medic. Steve's characteristic is "lazy"... he practically deserves an RPG to the face for daring to take a break in the middle of a firefight!

Lelz. I hope to pull this one out with the kid today or tomorrow. She's never played this one. She's been obsessed with Bomberman and Balloon Fight recently. Please forgive me.

Just "fired" it up ... pardon the pun! I've always been interested in this game. The cover art is cool and I have always liked the design of the sprites and the detailed graphics of the terrain. It's also a unique concept and a good use of the Light Phaser. Seems like most Light Phaser games used a sort of first person perspective, but it works quite well for this top-down perspective while playing to the system's strengths in 2D graphics. The indirect control of the game (you can only work to ensure the medic's safety, not the pace at which they advance) adds to the tension. It's really cool to be able to shoot down rockets and boomerangs as they're incoming. The music is unusually peppy and cheerful considering the rather grim meaning of the gameplay, but that's par for the course for the charming 8-bit era. All in all a very enjoyable selection. I look forward to seeing how far I can get in this game without resorting to the "proximity cheat."

ARGGGH. I just discovered when we went to play today that my TV does not support the LP. It registers the gun is there because the game starts, but it won't pick up the light. We ended up playing Aladdin instead.

Seems like quite a difficulty spike when the second level begins!

Sorry, Stan! It's a CRT you're using? Have you tried cranking up the brightness?

Not really, but it might give you a feeling of satisfaction to see the screen get brighter.
