Hi Everyone! This was a really difficult choice but at the end of the day I went for (in my opinion) the best Sega Master System title of all time. This game as it all, excellent graphics, brilliant music and enough puzzles and secrets to keep you entertained for hours. I played this game through last year and found something new, so even after 28 years its still giving me surprises! I hope everyone enjoys it as much as I do and I hope I introduce it to a few people who have either never played it or have never given it much of a chance. Wonderboy In Monster Land..

Lol, I am so not surprised by your choice! Great game, very possibly the game I have spent the most time playing over the last 30ish years. 9 out 10 times I die in the castle on the way to the dragon. Those stupid "elevator blocks" that you need to jump up always do me in.

This is a great game. So many secrets and memorable characters, with a real sense of going on a journey. Plus the mysterious cartridge label: "Super Wonder Boy Super Monster Land"! I've played it many times but have never beaten it. I think getting lost in the maze at the end is the closest I've gotten. Maybe this will be the month that I finally complete it!

I really get what you mean about the feeling of going on a journey... This really sums up the game and whats kept me coming back to it for all these years.

Aas i just wrote in the game club topic, if ever that was my choice if i got pressured to do that I lately got a bit more into the game again for no particular reason but (really i just thought "monster land, let's play it") i played the arcade version, pc engine version and with nostalgia the ms version remains my favourite. I can still remember buying that game along with 2 others (columns and enduro racer i think) in the day with my father and my brother, there are lots of memories and my earliest memoriest of cursing like a pirate (something that is normal for me) because the game overall isn't that difficult, the labyrinth in the end though with the time limit is evil I really like the game a lot and as i said i played through it some 2 weeks ago where i for like the first time took the downward path on the pseudo labyrinth (round 8), you have to jump over spiked but it makes you skip the entire closed town where you fight the wizard for some thunder flashes (and the shooting plants and crabs) a good shortcut actually. I really love that game

Another platformer, you guys must really hate me I hadn't played it before and it seems okay so far. You pretty much have to get enough cash to get shoes at the first shop otherwise jumping is impossible - I did not get very far first time because I didn't have enough money for shoes! The timing for your attacks seems overly specific as well, particularly when jumping - if your sword doesn't connect, you will take damage... but you have a very narrow "thrust window" with which to hit something. How does the status screen work? I don't seem to be able to do anything on there. First time I played, the recovery potion automatically picked me up when I died but second time around I just died and game over, without the potion being used. Also the time limit is frustrating as hell. It's not as ludicrously short as say, New Zealand Story, but it is on the short side (especially if you don't have a shoes upgrade and keep missing jumps!) and having an image transition rather than numbers is irritating! The very mention of a maze with a time limit... urgh, I really really dislike it when games do that.

Hi You only get one recovery potion so once its used you will die when you have lost all your hearts. There are lots of secret coins and hearts hidden throughtout the game, jumping where there are trees, near shops and on roofs of buildings will often give you more money.. Always jump more than once as often you will find 3 coins or 3 sacks of coins. There are also timers hidden throughout the game, pick these up and your timer will be full again. The first boss is very easy to kill.. Just stand still and let it come to you Always read what the people behind the doors tell you and if you get to a space where a door would fit try knocking on the wall... There are a few hidden doors that you must find to collect items that you need to complete the game Ps if you finish a level with all your hearts you get an extra heart at the end of the stage.

I meant second tine around was a new game - the recovery potion was unused and I just died to game over when I ran out of hearts

As it's mostly going to be, I'm playing with emulator.
First impressions: solid platformer as any, compared to WB3 (of which I have lot more experience) the attack may be even better, but jumping isn't quite as sharp as in that or some other games. Platformers never really were my thing, but if I'd gotten this 25 years ago, I bet I would've given a good shot at finishing it. Now I'm just going to cheat with emulator save...

Always wanted to beat this one. Depends how long my daughter will sit hahaah. She's getting used to games, but still too little for me to play long. I probably won't be back into it, with her, for another year.

Had my first go on wonderboy in monster land, was reluctant to play it since nearbythiscaf always goes on about it! I have to admit it, I'm slightly hooked! The graphics are great and no lagging when stabbing something is a bonus. I love the puzzle of figuring out the right way on the last level and trying to find hidden coins to buy much needed amour, shields and boots to make this game slightly easier. The music isn't annoying but the bats and time limit are!!! I think this may become a favourite.
