the one saturday that I go to bury and don't see what they have, this is what happens checked online and the rarest thing bury have according to the website is a ''mint'' sonic chaos for £20. apparently they are charging £290 for a mint smurfs 2 *if* they get one in stock. look in the sky, theres a pig To be fair I think one of them was Sonic Chaos for £20 which stood out from thr others as being over priced. The rest were around the £8 - £10 ish bracket, which if complete proobably isnt too bad these days. yeah £8 is probably quite fair for a complete common game in a shop, the junk store on the other side of the town centre is slightly cheaper but he very rarely gets master system stuff in. I can see why people would go there rather than ebay or facebook groups, especially with the latter being such a minefield

I caught Cex trying to pull a fast one on me today , I sent some sms games to them for trade in as I could then use the credit to buy some megadive games . I sent them all up as in mint condition . The prices they offered where really good £12 for Dick Tracy , £12 for Golden Axe , £12 for Olympic Gold , they offered me £90 in total which I was happy with ,
Then I got an email saying that the games had all been downgraded to " boxed " condition and now the total was £40 for the trade in , I was surprised as the games where mint so I asked for them to be sent back , I was thinking mint must mean " like new "
Got all the games back today as promised and noticed they all had those very annoying price stickers on , and all of them are priced as " mint " So basically they got the games and priced them up as mint and then sent me an email saying they where only in boxed condition .
Going to fire off an email complaining , also going to keep the stickers on and drop the games off in person to my local Cex and see if they give me full price On reflection it's probably only loose carts or games missing manuals I would send again , but you got to be careful dealing with them

'Boxed' to me is basically saying its missing the manual. I'd be tempted to offload all my common spares to them but maybe in person.

After my previous unsuccessful attempt to trade in some spare sms games to cex I decided to drop them in person to my local store . Managed to get everything traded in this time , if you can get them accepted as mint the credit prices for common games is really good , cash price not so much but I can buy megadrive games from them so I don't mind credit . I wonder how they can make profit giving £10 credit for Olympic Gold or Dick Tracey
They did look over the games closely and the games need to be near perfect to get mint , they didn't test them so that is a worry , I asked them about fake games and they said the would test anything over a certain value , but didn't mention opening them up . They must keep a retron 5 out back , can't imagine they have all those systems hooked up .
I got £85 credit for a bunch of common games , Just ordered gunstar heroes for the megadrive for 80 , I would have struggled to get £50 quid for the stuff on ebay so I basically got gunstar heroes for a great price providing it arrives in nice condition .

I guess a lot depends on how good your local stores are, the one near where I work is horrendous, but bury and Bolton are decent enough. I wouldn't buy off the website as it is too much of a gamble

Recently I've been taking stuff into my local shop to sell for vouchers to spend online, my local shop seldom have anything I'm after in stock. I get through quite a lot of 360 and PS2 stuff, it's cheap and I'm not overly bothered about instructions so long as the disks play, overall the quality of the stuff they've sent has been very good and usually complete. I'm amassing quite a collection and find my latest unhealthy interest is heading me into the darkest depths of PS2 shovelware! With their recent level of service bordering on impressive, I decided to start tagging a couple of cart only SMS games onto the orders, I mean after all, how bad could they fudge a cart only order.... Believe me I'm not complaining, but it makes you wonder what did the shop assistant that labeled this up think? Should this be in a bigger box, maybe a shipper carton? Anyway, I'm very pleased as it's complete and in pretty decent condition bar a little fraying along the bottom of the sleeve. It's rare the price ticket is left on when I receive stuff from them online, so wonder if the sender realised their error but sent it in good faith anyway. Every other unboxed game has turned up cart only as expected, so presume this is a flukey one off. At the time of writing this I have another voucher burning a hole in my pocket and have noticed they have a couple of cheaper SMS titles boxed that are only a quid or two higher than the cart only. It may be a gamble but think I'm going to risk ordering the boxed and keep my fingers crossed.

It's always a gamble with cex , I recently received a Bubsy II for the megadrive which had actually been been chewed up by a dog , the returns process is hassle free so it's not so much of a big deal I recently tried to trade in a mint double dragon , guy rejected it because it had ' pins missing ' he hadn't a clue what he was doing , My local store do not test the games , they don't have the hardware to do it , I once asked if they used a retron 5 for testing but the guy had no idea what I was talking about .
I don't think the master system has been that much of a cash cow for cex , I noticed they have stopped accepting games like super tennis , the ninja , monaco gp etc . They have also slashed the trade in prices for most games , they offered some great prices at the beginning , Also they still are selling certain games way to cheap , streets of rage II mint £25 , Home alone mint £30 , Dr.Robotnik mint £28 They will never get anyone to trade in at those prices .
I use them mostly to buy megadrive games , I recently bought 10 wii controllers at a car boot for under £20 and sent them to cex for £150 in credit , and got a mint Maximum Carnage and Splatter House , Those games on ebay would be over £100 and I basically got them for £20 .

Yeah I've had a couple of dog attacks in my time collecting , strictly no dogs in my games room , This copy of out run fell victim to a vicious dog attack Good thing cartridge's are ultra durable , still works like a charm , got this in a bundle , seller described everything as ' in working condition ' which is technically correct I guess .

Wow, that really is something else. Are you going to cart swap it with a world soccer or you not that bothered about it? Think I've been very lucky so far with the quality of stuff I've received, long may it remain that way! Quick question, you say you've had 'mint' stuff from CEX, in your opinion, how good is 'mint' as I know many collectors would deem mint to be as-new whereas others would be more lenient on their grading?

Quick question, you say you've had 'mint' stuff from CEX, in your opinion, how good is 'mint' as I know many collectors would deem mint to be as-new whereas others would be more lenient on their grading? Well I've never actually received an actual mint game from cex , I should have said I ordered a mint Maximum Carnage and Splatter House . I've purchased maybe 20 megadrive games from them all listed as mint , I only had to return 3 , the rest while certainly not mint as they where maybe missing hanging tabs or manuals creased or other small imperfections where still fine to keep . To me mint is perfect condition , cex have told me mint is perfect condition also , very few games this age are in perfect condition CEX basically want to only accept games as in boxed condition , looking at the trade in prices sometimes they are even offering the same trade in for boxed and mint anyway . Addams Family boxed £4 , mint £4 Batman Returns boxed £2 , mint £2 Dracula boxed £4 , mint £4 Captain Silver boxed £4 , mint £4 Theirs many more like this and the cash prices are way less , I can't see cex getting much stock at those prices , they are a bit more clued up with the megadrive so I can keep sending my wii controllers and xbox 360 stuff and getting cheap games that way . I'm just gonna keep the outrun cartridge and use it to bore people who visit about how reliable cartridges are .

I'm not from the UK, but we had something similar to CEX three years ago in France, a videogame brand of shops that started to buy and sell retro stuff. I managed to unload huge piles of unsellable retro junk and they gave me like three or four times the price I could expect from ebay in coupon with which I was more than happy to buy a nintendo DS + games and a couple of comics and DVDs So I would recommend to try the same if you have one CEX nearby, just sell them all the unsellable stuff you got from years and years of buying bulk lots

Since I had moved to Leeds and now have a CEX near me I've been buying all sorts from charity shops, car boots etc and overall my experience of the place has been mixed. If the local store manager wasn't as knowledgeable as the typical staff I would have said it was a terrible place.
I must have traded in around 400/500 worth for roughly less than half of what I paid probably more than that too. When they first start doing PS1 it was great they paid so much for just a loose unit with 1 dual shock and lead, around £26 if I could remember. While picking them up at car boots and local ads from around 5/10 each. The prices of some stuff has dropped drastically. So I've always found its best to trade frequently while the iron is still hot.
So here comes the bad part out of 7 SNES cartridges I've ordered online a whopping 5 had been repros. Meaning travelling to the store getting a refund, buying online only to find a lot of their more expensive snes games are fake. I've only bought 1 master system game. The fact the ads don't state if they include a manual just puts me right off. From what I understand boxed to them means box with a chance of a non mint manual. Which I'm not that too fussed about. The general staff at mine besides for the manager are clueless when it comes to anything retro. So what I tend to do is build up vouchers. Buy anything to resell in store that I can see for myself its condition. Or recently I bought several copies of crash for the PS4 and sold them for roughly the same changing voucher in to cash to fund buy master system games through eBay.

Yeah I thought CEX would have a big problem with SNES repros when they started the retro stuff , just because it costs more . But 5/7 is really high percentage , They don't open the carts up to check them , but it's not even necessary for scammers to make a repro , just put a new label on a super tennis cart , Even with genuine carts the reproduction boxes would easily fool the staff . Luckily people like you can spot the repro's but alot of people will get tricked and then when they decide to sell they make their way on to the open market .
