I got a bit further last night as I'd been stuck on the whirlwind boss. Think I got to the level where it goes dark - how far am I through the game? Pretty close to the end. If I recall correctly, that part is on the sixth level and there are seven total.

I played through this and completed it with both asterix and obelix a few months ago but it's still quite fresh in my memory .
My thoughts on this game would be largely positive . Graphically it's excellent just like the original was , anyone who has played asterix on the nes will see their is no comparison .
The sound does not match up to the original but that said it's by no means the worst sound I've come across , Game play is great and the level design is quite varied with underwater , desert , snow and underground levels .
I found the game to have a good difficulty curve , while the bad guy's are easily enough to dispatch their are a number of really tricky jumps where you really have to be on your game . Also a couple of the bosses took me more than a few tries to defeat them , and we also have a few puzzles thrown in for good measure , I particularly enjoyed one of the last levels you got to press left in order to move right . All in all the game can be finished 40 maybe 50 minutes which is fine , easy games are pointless IMO .
One point that that I've not seen raised yet is that just like the original the levels in many cases are completely different depending on which character you select , this is a great feature that I've yet to see in other sms games . Helps improve the replay value massively or if you get stuck on a level often changing character means the level is slightly easier .
I never owned this as a kid but I know that if someone gave this to me for my birthday I would not have been disappointed .

Ok so I got to the last boss (I assume), got a few questions...
How many appearances does he make? I go to the part where he is launching balls at you.
There is one part of the game where you can spam collecting extra lives, it was a secret passage and you could just go off screen and go back and get another extra life.
Does anyone know where the extra heart power ups are?

Ok so I got to the last boss (I assume), got a few questions... How many appearances does he make? I go to the part where he is launching balls at you. He regenerates once, so basically he's got two appearances and his actions and patterns are the same both times. But when you defeat his second appearance, he lets off one final burst of cannonballs as he dies, so beware! I did pretty well by drawing him close to the sides of the screen.

Pleased to say this turned up this morning. Am massively looking forward to having a crack at it this weekend and finally being able to add constructive comments to the thread.

I had another stab with Obelix and it was a bit better... though the collision detection is still horrendous (consistently at least, so you can hit enemies without being too near them) and the jumping floaty. Different level set but same problems - is it a transition or is it an instant death pit? And that whirlwind boss that requires a very specifically timed jump or you don't make it over him and take damage. Would be fine if the controls weren't so unresponsive.
I got to near the end, in a shrine looking for the last flower (what IS the plot to this? I skipped the cutscenes because the text was slow) and I got stuck. Could get to what looked like the exit (find hidden passage, activate hidden switch, get to door) but the door did nothing. And everything else just loops you back to start eventually. Looked it up on youtube and the guy went straight to the flower after the first room! But he didn't kill anyone. Then the rest of the level played out as it did for me with the exit working. Honestly, do you have to pacifist that bit to get the flower?? Does it tell you that in the intro cutscene for the level (which I skipped over) or in the manual? What a load.

First impressions... I really like it. Only had one little session playing 'life or level' with my partner who also enjoyed it. Think most of what I'm about to say has already been mentioned. Graphics are superb, the sound didn't bother me as much as it seems to have others, judging from earlier posts. The slowdown on block break is annoying but hasn't really been a major problem, it just feels odd. The surfing level is cool, guessing from others comments that this was the only bit of it, if that's the case it's a shame. When I got to the fountains bit, just after getting the extra life where you jump down, I jumped down again and felt cheated to die, had another couple of lives here and a couple of the jumps seem harshly difficult compared to the others, then had to call it a day to go out. It's definitely one I'll go back to over the next few months and see if I can complete it, and in my opinion a great game to kick off the new game club with.
