What games do you think it would have took for sega to launch the master system so that it wouldve been more popular than the nes?
I thought about this a wee while ago, im convinced that if sega wouldve released sonic the hedgehog at the same time as the SMS and done the same kind of advertising campaign as the did with megadrive sonic that the SMS would be remembered as THE 8-bit console!
a few others that would have helped would have been streets of rage, mortal kombat, golden axe warrior, what do yous think?
BTW TOPIC 100 is MINE! *evil laugh*

Sonic would've been a great launch title and some other games would be Castle of Illusion with its great graphic and Phantasy Star and Ghostbusters cause that was a really hot brand then and could've pushed the sales of the system And not to forget a lot of advertisement, i think that was alwas the fault of sega. At least here in Germany and i guess in Europe

I believe that these game would have made difference:
Castle of Illusion Golden Axe Warrior Mortal Kombat Phantasy Star Sonic 1 Sonic 2 Streetfighter 2 Streets of Rage Wonderboy 3 - the Dragon's trap Wonderboy in Monsterworld

;D Great topic Sinistral ;D Ok, here's my thoughts: 1. Shinobi- You cannot disagree that this is one hell of a platformer. 2. Space Harrier- My favorite shooter on the SMS. The colors, the "3D"ish graphics. Wonderful. 3. Golden Axe Warrior- A Zelda killer. Bar-none. 4. Phantasy Star- A solid RPG that is still sought after in todays market by gamers. 5. Alex Kidd in Miracle World- An iconic symbol for the SMS and Mario killer. With these five games and wonderful advertsing, I think Sega could have came ahead in the beginning. But you have got to remember that times were different back then. The gaming crash had just ended and people didn't want to see competitors again (The reason the market for games crashed initially.) We are talking about the US side of things of course, in Europe, you guys basked in all the SMS's glory.

well, you´re right shinobiman, here in portugal the Master System had the best advertisment money can buy: in all the stores there was an SMS with AKMW, so we were easly seduced by the 8 bits black box. I believe the biggest problem there in the States was Nintendo´s monopolist vision of videogames. The big N´s actions put sega in a very difficult situation!!!

I guess the main problem was, that nintendo has exclusive contracts with nearly all developer and thats why the master system hadn't a chance. I think the system would have done better with games like mega man, final fantasy or turtles for example. Cause people always prefer games with big names or brands rather than "unknown" games

I agree with Shinobiman. I though that Alex Kidd In Miracle world, Shinobi and Space Harrier were released soon after the SMS launch, thats why i didn't include them in my list.

Also some sega titles were made for the NES by 3rd party comapnies, although the SMS versions were far superior to the NES versions.

I have some NES roms on my PC and some of these games have very poor playability and usability. Some of these games would have been great on the SMS.
