Really interested to see what wins out. I'm trying to vote strictly on art, not game content, especially if the art is unique to the SMS version of the game. Im sticking with this too. I actually havent voted on 2 of my top 5 SMS (Phantasy star and Miracle warriors) games cause the cover art is pretty sad and I voted on a couple of games I dont own (Speedball for example) that Im tempted to seek out and buy specifically because of this contest.

In the group Miracle Warriors was in I actually thought it was one of the better covers, just goes to show how wide open this competition is

Thousand thanks for the huge effort rupert Just voted, although in one group I couldn't simply choose three cover since I found only two that weren't ugly Once finished, I suggest we keep all the groups and do a "most ugly covers" vote

Once these polls all lock on Boxing Day I was going to take note of all the games with zero votes then at some point (maybe end of Jan when I have a week off) do a new tournament for worst box art just using the zero vote games.

I'm also trying to judge solely on the artwork, not the game... hence no vote for Kenseiden from me, though I love the game itself. The artwork isn't bad, but it's also not among the best.
I will say, personally I'm usually not very impressed with licensed games that use imagery like movie posters... although it's appropriate, I just find original illustrations a lot more interesting.

Could we not just run the same tournament for the worst? Flicking through the groups in this, there are a few real bad covers with the odd vote that I'm sure the majority would straight up vote for as worst. I think if only including covers with 0 votes a fair few badum's will slip the net. Would maybe mean little more than a copy/paste than you having to fully restructure a new one from scratch

I guess we could have another poll to see what people want to do nearer the time Just re-ording all the groups with all 315 games would be very time consuming (again) Making sure I've not duplicated any games or left any out, copying in all the scan links and adding in all the poll selections! At least I now have an excel doc saved with all the game names along with the direct links to the scans - that was painfull going through every single one to copy the location. After I had added the 3rd group poll to the forum I realsied it would be quicker to go through the rest of the scans in alphabetical order then sort the remaining groups afterwards.

Just a mini update on progress follewing 2 days of voting. Most groups have had around 15 people voting, with Group A having 21 people voting. There are some clear favourites already in some of the groups and in others it looks like we may get a few extra games progressing due to tie situations. Its quite clear already that a lot of people have very different taste when it comes to art, which is great and makes it more interesting Nice to seem some real effort going into critiquing from people, it's a good read and occassionally has made me check back at what I picked to make sure I made the right choices. Hopefully there will still be plenty more votes and discussion over the remaining week and a bit.

Especially Centrale's comments, very well written.

Rupert, are you planning on having the Brazilian Bart vs the Space Mutants cover in the fray? That's a good one. Very unique.

I just want to thank rupert again for the effort put into organizing this. It's great to see the community responding and activity increasing on the forum! Centrale's commentary is excellent and a true pleasure to read (even if I don't necessarily agree with some of his choices, LOL). I too hope when we get through all the rounds we can do a worst or ugliest cover art contest. When you take the time to really study each cover, there is defiantly something that could be said for each one (good or bad).

As we are 1 week into stage 1 with another week left to vote I thought I would give a little mid point update. So far 842 votes have been cast across all the groups. The game with the most votes so far is Streets of Rage with 14 votes. However there are few games not far behind. There are 91 games with 0 votes There are an extra 6 games going through to the next stage at them moment due to tie situations. The most voters for a group is Group A with 23 voters, the least is Group N with just 16 people voting, Hopefully there will be some more voting over the next 7 days

I love the range of votes we're seeing, showing how artwork in general is interpreted and appreciated differently

Commenting my votes, I noticed few things.
I like: - simple and to the point - licensed game covers to represent the franchise - covers to match the feel of the game I don't like: - covers full of stuff - comedy
I don't think it's necessary for art to be unique to MS. Take Mortal Kombat: it would be silly to not use the classic logo. If it works, don't fix it. Then again, T2 could've used something more imaginative - actually all Terminators.

There are 91 games with 0 votes I would include the games with only one vote as well in the ugliest cover contest (when/if it happens) as they apparently only appeal to a small or "niche" group of individuals. I for example am the lone vote for Astro Warrior/Pit Pot.
