I hope these images come out okay for other people. I'm using Internet Explorer 10 and they appear okay to me and all the same size despite the different resolutions they were scanned at. All looks fine via my iPad too.

I picked Renegade, Streets of Rage and Marble Madness. As a 9 year old boy standing in Woolworths, the box art on the first two is exactly the sort of style that would make me want to buy a game. As for the third, it's purely for nostalgia, and the fact that the artwork makes the game look far more exciting and action-packed than it actually is!

Funny that with a random number generator, both Wimbledon 1 and 2 end up in the same group as well as two Shinobi games.

Some of these games I don't own so it's great to actually take time and appreciate the artwork, I chose Streets of rage, Xenon 2 and Renegade

Golfamania looks like the kind of illustration that would have fit right in with the early years of Atari 2600 box art - it's a style I really admire. Both Renegade and Wimbledon have nice compositions, but something about the rendering of the faces is off-putting to me. Wimbledon II is bringing the ultra-mullet heat, but the color scheme cools it right down. The Shadow Dancer cover has always struck me as odd... a rare watercolor painting in the library of SMS box art, the flat perspective and disproportionately large Shinobi are weird. Power Strike's PAL color cover is so-so... I have to say I really prefer the illustration on the U.S. version - and although that one was printed in monochrome, there is a color version of that illustration that was featured in the U.S. Team Sega newsletter that's worth taking a look at. Of the iconographic covers in this round, I like Great Volleyball the best.
This time I'm going with Golfamania, Streets of Rage, and Xenon 2.

I went with Golfamania also, for pretty much the same reason as Centrale. I don't think it would have drawn me to buying the game though, but I do like it from an artistic perspective. I also picked Penguine Land as I remember renting it back in the day due to the cover art intriguing me, there is just something I really like about it. It might be the colour of the penguine. Last I picked Xenon II, the ship reminds me of that early 90's style you saw a lot of back then but you don't seem to see now, which is a shame. I quite like the blocky background too and the gun fire 'blasting' through the frame and across the grid pattern. If I could have had a 4th pick it would have been Shadow Dancer, it's quite a dark and gritty scene makes me want to play the game. This tournament has made me look at SMS box art much more closely than I ever have before. There are so many that I have never properly given time to and I'm appreciating them more now

According to Wikipedia, TV Colosso is a hack of Asterix. (The secret Mission I assume) Is this true? I don't own either game and can't be sure by looking at the screen shots on the back of each cover.

Power Strike: describes arcade shooter well Alien 3: keep it simple, stupid Shinobi: ninja+shuriken=cool (actually that logic didn't work for The Ninja...)

Power Strike - captures the game well Renegade - Nice to see some Japanese style artwork on a Euro release Xenon2 - Really nice artwork for a disappointing game
