Sorry guys but not seeing the love for this game.
Firstly I am annoyed as I tried re-loading my save and it did not recognise the password! despite being very careful to double check the password while writing it to take sure it is correct. This lead to me having to replay some of the game again.
Secondly it is annoying as all hell when cornered or being bounced between enemies while frozen and cannot hit back or do anything for a few seconds. Let me just get hit and be able to fight straight back damnit without being bounced all over the place!
Thirdly dunno if it's just me but the controls while jumping can feel very slidey and not nearly as responsive as I would like! especially going over lava pitfalls. Desert section springs to mind at the moment.
Some Master System classics I understand! Castle of Illusion! Sonic! etc I am not saying this game is awful or anything but extremely annoying and frustrating and don't feel it's the classic everyone keeps raving it to be.

I had a similar experience when I first played the game way back in the day. From your description it seems that you did exactly what I did, which was to head right when you get to the desert into the lava area. You are actually supposed to go left when you get to the desert which eventually takes you to the pyramid and the next boss. The lava area is meant for later in the game when you have much better equipment and some new abilities.
If you haven't beaten the boss in the pyramid yet, it pays to make sure you have all the equipment available to you before you go. You can get the Mithril Sword, Mithril Shield, and Mithril Armor in the main town, but you can also get the Goblin Mail from the building at the far right of the first water area (where you get the key to the tower). If you have your Mithril Armor equipped, you will have enough CP (charm points) to see the Goblin Mail for sale in that shop. So before you head left at the desert to the pyramid, make sure you have the Mithril Sword, Mithril Shield and Goblin Mail equipped (don't forget to actually equip them in the inventory menu). Also whenever you go to a shop, make sure you are wearing the armor that gives you the highest CP (charm points), so that you can see more items for purchase. The Goblin Mail in particular has a low CP.
The game didn't start to get good for me until I had beaten the boss in the Pyramid, and from there the game was awesome. It is much like any game with RPG elements, it can take a while to get into it at the beginning, but once you do it can be very rewarding. Dragon's Trap became my favorite game of the 8bit era, and I highly recommend persisting with it. Dragon's Trap is definitely no Sonic or Castle of Illusion, it is an action adventure, that requires a shift in mindset compared with typical action based platformers.
