Why do the Game Gear flicker in SMS Mode?

What sort of flicker? Sprites? The whole screen? Or when scrolling?

I have never wanted to turn mine on without a game... But when the Game Gear can not read the pins from not being connected just right in the game slot.. You can get multiple screen issues
