Dragon Crystal. Even with smart phones and Xbox one's, It's a game that can so easily be a boredom buster, even for my kids. Each time a game is started, there is always going to be a different outcome. For me back then when i first played it, i didn't really enjoy it straight away, as it wasn't the usual frantic speed style of game that was my trend then. After playing it a bit more due to just wanting something different to play, it grew on me as I started to learn a different genre to what I already knew.
The thing that did get me completely loving this game was that it was different every time, so it limited the time value of the game. I know that there are some iconic RPG games for the Master System, such as Golden axe Warrior, which I'm only half way through right now, and Phantasy Star, which I still need to for my modern collection, but Dragon Crystal is a game which I believe isn't given the credit it deserves.
It is a game that has also stood the test of time. Even with modern technology my sons, particularly one, rates it as one of his favourite games and almost getting to the end. Getting to the end on this game is not easy. Even modern gaming pro's would struggle to get this game completed. Not that it is all that hard to play, but more because of how it was hard to plan from the beginning as it was just random each game. I played the game enough to complete it twice. I hope that, that one son does eventually complete it too.
So anyone that hasn't played it, you start as a regular dude walking around a maze style game. The paths are hidden until you approach them. some areas open out to an area, or room, where there will be items like armour, food, weapons, scrolls, rods, potions, and rings. each having different abilities or curses. each movement of the game is after your move, so you could stand in the same spot next to a monster and they wouldn't attack you unless you made a move or attacked. Well mostly, but there are some monsters that move more than once to your one move.
30 levels to get through as well, which was a big deal to me when you had Sonic with 6 rounds. As the guy you control walks around, he's followed to start of with, by an an egg. Which as you progress, hatches and grows.
This game absolutely deserves so much more credit than it gets.
