In practice is almost academy award. We don't have artists opening envelopes. But you could to say "the oscar goes to..."

Yeah, I really like the Academy Awards idea too.
I see what you mean segarule2014, but I think it's too many steps. Would have to make people vote 4 times in each category and I think people would either be confused or just not bother to vote all 4 times. It would be better with voting twice, so it would be very much like the academy award idea with first picking the finalists in the first vote and then voting in the final.
Here is the only difference though. Secret voting or open poll voting. The Academy Award version would have to be secret voting and everybody sends in their votes to somebody who would count them and then present the winners. The other way would be open both times where one could see which game is leading and with how many votes etc.
Of course, we could have a hybrid and have the first vote where we pick the 5 finalist be a secret vote and have the final vote be an open poll.
That might be more fun.
Edit: Good point Transatlantic Foe.

I see vote 4 times would be boring, but it don't was in my mind in this format.
I did think about the votes by season. Begining Always October and November with 15 or 10 days by season. Therefore would be 4 votes with intervals (e.g 15 days) until reach the final step. The final step could got always 25 Dec each year. Why. Christmas season with all members involved with any game (included the awards winners). I guess that preliminar votes in steps before finals would be poll voting until reach the final. The choice for 5 finalists would have to be secret voting. Imagine the emotion in to know the winners after the result by secret vote? But we can try diferents fomulas and see what is the better.

I had an idea that mixes both elements of the awards show and the elimination aspect plus it can be done each year and would still be interesting each time. How about a SEGA 8-Bit Hall of Fame? With the same rules as sports Hall of Fames like the Baseball one. Which means that everybody picks between 0-5 games that we think should be included in the Hall of Fame, but for a game to make it in the Hall it has to have at least 75-80% of the votes. Which means that if 10 people pick their 5 games, one game has to be on 8 peoples list to make it to the Hall of Fame. A high percentage would make sure that such a list would be only filled with games most people agree are HoF worthy plus to ensure that for example in a couple of years time if we run out of great games and we see mediocre games get more votes we have a system that you can vote for no games if you think there are no HoF games left. If 3 out 10 people vote no games that means no game will be inducted into the Hall of Fame that year. Before each years voting we could have a thread were everybody argues why a certain game deserves to be in a HoF, plus a HoF game doesn't have to be the best game (as that is a highly subjective thing), it could be the most technically superior one or just the most fun, if you argue your point good enough to sway people to vote for it, it could make it to the HoF. Each induction would get it's own lengthy write-up that would go on on a certain HoF section of the homepage/forum which would included testimonials from people sharing their memories, opinions or general thoughts about the game inducted. And lastly as a last line of defense which also makes the HoF an active one that can change each year, we could have a period of the year where a game inducted in the HoF can be challenged and thus put to a vote if it still deserves to be in the HoF. If for example ShadowAngel manages to convince us that WWF Steel Cage deserves to be in the HoF and it gets voted in, Ian could challenge it at a later date and we could vote it off if we have sobered up to the fact that it sucks But even if we chose not to do the HoF idea this time around, I really think we should do it sometime in the future. I think it has potential to be both fun and raise quite a lot of activity and game discussion. I will create a poll now with the Awards, HoF or Tournament options to see which one people are most interested in.

A few years back, Phil organised an SMS awards but I don't think the results were ever properly published. We had several categories such as Best Graphics, Best Music, Best Game, etc. I believe general suggestions were made in a thread, and the top 3 were then put to vote in a poll (with the results hidden).
I was working on animation as a way to present the awards/results. Unfortunately I never finished it but when I watched what I had done back again, it was actually pretty good. I think as long as there aren't too many categories, I could be motivated to put something together and finish it this time.

Jonathan, your Hall of Fame idea is brillant! We definitely must include such a yearly ceremony, that will be a lot of fun! I agree with the secret voting idea too for some reasons. I know it´s all about Master System games of course, but at this time, some new Mega Drive games are in the making for 2015. Maybe we get more great Master System AND Mega Drive games every year now, and maybe you all agree with me that we should include games for both consoles in the "Best New Game" category. If yes, we could get a very exciting voting. We could divide them into two different categories of course (Best New Master System Game & Best New Mega Drive Game), but both together makes it even bigger in my opinion. Just an idea^^ I have some concepts which games could be included, but before I go on with that, I wait what you think first.

I see this as a collaborate effort regardless if it ends up being an awards show, HoF or tournament, as anybody interested can help out in anyway they can. Even if it's "just" feedback and ideas.
But yeah, animations or anything to make the end result special would be amazing as that's something I can't do on my own.

It might be a good idea to mix them in a category like that (with so few games), but otherwise I'm not sure about mixing 8 and 16 bits if it's not 8-bit related like the Master System Brawl for the Mega Drive. I think the secret to make something like the awards work as an annual thing would be to have categories that are relevant and fresh each year. Like best new game as you mentioned. Cause I don't see the need to choose best RPG each year for example as Phantasy Star would most likely end up winning each year with a landslide. But that doesn't mean we can't have that category this time around. So if we end up doing it this year and redoing it again next year, it should be to sum up 2015 and not redo the same game categories again. We could have a single category for that, just best SMS game. But the question then would be, how many categories can we come up with that can be used each year and be fresh and relevant? But then again, that is more of a possible future problem and not a current need

It's the reason because i claimed that a game not would be included in subsequent year. If Phantasy Star won in 2014, in 2015 Phantasy star don't would be included in RPG category, but could enter in 2016 the what don't mean that would win.

I see what you mean, but I think it would make the awards kind of a joke if we have a category called best RPG and not include the best RPG because it won last year.
I think it either has to be the same category next year and live with the fact that some games will win each time or not include that category next time.

If Golvellius win in another year is too bad that it don't deserve in RPG category? The members will know choise the winner correct.

Then we agree to disagree But this "problem" is still a year away and can easily be fixed by asking people in a poll next year if they want to include the winners or not in the next awards.
